Spencer woke up to her alarm buzzing in her ear. Sighing, she reached over and shut it off. The first day of classes always made her nervous but today she was feeling a different kind of nervous. Remembering her last text message to and from Ashley she grabbed for her phone. Smiling broadly she read the screen. “1 new text message”. In a flash the smile was gone as she kept reading “Éfrom Danny”. Flipping open the phone she read the message.

Spencer wanted that message to make her feel better but it didn’t. With one last hope she looked out of her window hoping to find Ashley sunbathing. No such luck.

Spencer: “I think you’re beautiful”.

She quoted Ashley’s text message while looking in the mirror. She wished she were standing in front of her right now.

With a heavy sigh she threw on her clothes and grabbed her books. She was grateful that no one else in the house was awake yet. She wasn’t sure she would be able to hide her contempt at the world at this hour. Locking the front door Spencer made her way to her car and eventually to class.

She spent the entire day checking her cell phone and contemplated texting Ashley. But everytime she was about to hit “send” she chickened out. In her last class, which by far was the most important class she zoned out for the entire 3 hours. Her brain would flash random images that she desperately tried to push away. Pictures of Ashley sitting on her bed, standing on the deck smoking (which some how she made seem sexy), Danny waking her up on a usual Sunday morning in the city, Ashley smiling at her on the terrace, Danny kissing her while ice skating at Rockefeller Center, Some woman running her fingers across Ashley’s bodyÉand that’s when Spencer began reading her text book just to read it. Anything to take her mind of the brunette.

When class finally ended Spencer ran out the door. She couldn’t sit there another second. On her drive home she realized that she couldn’t keep herself from thinking of Ashley. And as her father always said “ if ya can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em”. Detouring on her way home she stopped at Best Buy. Scanning the shelves she searched desperately for the one thing that she hoped would make her feel better.
