First to break – (Chapter: Rough Diamond)

“A lot’s changed,” I sighed, feeling a wave of nostalgia hit me forcefully.  I didn’t feel regretful though, both out of principle and because I had no regrets from my time with Aiden.  It was just that things had dramatically changed since then.  I refused to get too emotional over the past – I had cried enough tears over everything that had happened to us.  I lightly toed the corner of the rug on my bedroom floor that covered the wine stain from that night.

“Things have the tendency to do that,” Aiden nodded, “right when you think they never will.”

We were silent for a moment, both lost in thought.

“Me and Nikki are through,” I told him, my train of thought about my history of change leading me up to date with the most recent turn of events.  Aiden looked at me, his brows furrowed.

“I didn’t realise you two were officially together,” he said.

“We weren’t,” I sighed.  “Though now we most definitely aren’t!”

Aiden chuckled slightly and put his arm around me.

“What are you like, hey?” he smiled and kissed my temple.  “You still up for going out tonight?”

“Of course,” I smiled, putting on my most eager and up-for-it face.

“We can stay in if you like,” Aiden soothed.  At that moment I wished Aiden was a girl – he’d have been so perfect for me.  But the moment passed, and I’d been there and done that and I wasn’t about to let history repeat itself.  I loved Aiden, but it was purely platonic; a completely asexual love.  I wondered what life would have been like if I hadn’t preferred girls, if I hadn’t fallen from my popularity podium, if I hadn’t have conceived Aiden’s baby and then tragically lost it.  Man, life would be dull, I thought.

“No, no, it’s fine,” I beamed.  “I’m looking forward to going out!”

“Good… plus we need to find you a new fuck buddy!” Aiden laughed.

“Maybe I’m tired of that,” I suggested.  “Maybe I just wanna find the one and settle down.”

Aiden looked at me for a moment before a huge smile cracked onto his face.

“You nearly had me!” He laughed, bowing his head to my near-brilliance.

“Close but no cigar!” I grinned.
