    Heat Wave – (Chapter: Faith)

Ashley Davies stared determinedly at the roaring flames before her, bathing in the orange glow that sent rolling waves of heat crashing out into its surroundings. A feral grin etched its way across her face, and she spared the time to turn and wink to the closest man in her unit before pulling her helmet down, snapping on the oxygen hose, and charging brazenly into the flames. The sound of her comrades following her came muffled and hollow to her ears. The call had come in little over fifteen minutes ago, and by the time they arrived at the scene there was no chance to keep the fire from destroying the building. They had been given no more than seven minutes to check that the place was clear, that there were no survivors, but everyone knew that if anyone was still inside, there was next to no chance of survival. It wouldn’t be the flames that killed them, but the scalding pitch smoke that scarred their lungs, burned the lining of their throats, and lulled them into a painful slumber from which they would never awaken.

"This is such a waste of time, there’s nobody in here." McDaniel’s voice crackled over the speaker placed inside every helmet.

"Man, you’re right." Demaggio quickly visually scanned a room to his left, before continuing on a little further. "If anyone’s in here, they’re dead, and if they’re lucky, they’ll be dead in a matter of seconds."

"You guys are such assholes." Ashley brushed roughly past them both. "If it were someone you knew, you wouldn’t be saying that."

"Davies, you’re right, but there’s nobody in this building. We’ve called, we’ve checked." Demaggio laid a heavily gloved hand on her shoulder. "This apartment building’s empty. It’s ten o’clock in the morning, people are at work…and if someone’s in here who’s dumb enough to think it’s okay to chill while a building burns to ashes around them, hell, that’s their problem."

Ashley just shook her head in reply. He’s such a damned cynic.

"Demaggio, McDaniel, Davies," They all stopped walking as the sound of their Captain’s voice flooded their helmets. "I need you guys out of there. This roof isn’t gonna hold."
