    Missing Piece

I have that feeling again. That sense that something is missing. Like I have forgotten a piece of myself somewhere.

    —————————————————————-

The sky is littered with stars. Each sparkling so fiercly it seems as though they are screaming for my attention. The air is crisp. I inhale deeply, savouring the feel of the cool breeze on my over-heated skin. Slowly releasing my breathe with a sigh, I stare at the empty street below. My hands resting lightly on the railing.

The music reverberates inside. Each beat pulsing through the walls in a desperate bid to consume the silence. The party rages on, amplifying with each passing hour. Bodies merging into one as they dance. Feeling the urge to escape the confines of the hotel suite and the noise from the crowd, I find myself on the balcony of the main bedroom. Alone.

In my isolation I find the peace I need to sort through my thoughts. In my head is a flash of images I can’t quite get past. It had happened so fast, yet felt like an eternity all in the same moment.

I had been standing in the corner intently listening to my friend recounting her date, when suddenly I felt a shiver down my spine. The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end, and I needed to turn around. As if some unforessen force was urging me to.

I turned my head slowly towards the door. I froze. My breathe caught in my throat. My heart skipped a beat. There, through the mass of people, I saw her. Hair the colour of cinnamon, draping down to her shoulders, her fringe framing her face. Her body toned and tanned. A black dress clung to her form perfectly, as if it were designed purely for her. Shifting my gaze back to her delicate face I saw them. Brown eyes so deep I thought I would surely drown in that instant. They locked with mine.

In that moment the entire room disappeared with the world following after. Nothing existed except for her. This goddess that appeared from nowhere and claimed my soul. I felt as though I had spent my life waiting for her, for this moment.

Then, as quickly as she materialized, she was gone. Swept away by the influx of bodies. I scanned the room in a furious attempt to find her. My eyes shifting from person to person, with no luck. I excused myself from my friends and made my way through the horde to where she had stood seconds ago. I could feel her presence lingering. I spun in several directions as I tried to catch a glimpse of her….. nothing.

I felt as though all the oxygen had been extracted from my lungs. I began to sweat. I needed air. I needed to get away from the mob. I headed for the bedroom. The empty space wasn’t enough, I needed to breathe, to be away from the noise. I made my way to the balcony door, opening it, I gasped when the breeze hit me. It was refreshing. Closing the door behind me I tried to still my racing thoughts.

As I lean against the railing deep in thought, I fail to hear the door slowly slide open, then close……
