More Than Meets The Eye – (Chapter: Chpt. 3)

As Spencer pulled into the Carlin’s driveway, she got a pleasant surprise.

Her mother’s silver Infiniti was parked and sitting pretty.

She had actually said she would do something…and done it.

Hell must be freezing over…she thought to herself as she walked into the house.

“Hey sweetie, how are you?” Mrs. Carlin said greeting her daughter with an almost over the top kind of happiness.

“Uh, I’m fine. I see you’re home early,” Spencer replied, walking into the kitchen with her mother in tow.

“Yeah, I told you I would be,” Paula Carlin said with a grin as she went into the refrigerator.

Spencer eyed her slightly suspicious of this excellent mood and rare appearance.

“What smells so good? Is that…” she started off.

“Homemade apple pie? Why yes, it is,” Mrs. Carlin interrupted, pulling a gallon of milk out and shutting the fridge.

“Your favorite, eat up,” the woman dressed in business attire said as she put a small plate infront of her daughter with a glass of milk.

Spencer’s mom-dar was going  off like crazy, something was definitely up.

Her mom was being nice, home when she got there,  greeting her at the door, making her favorite dessert…Something was wrong, way wrong.

“Did someone die?” the teen asked, after giving the situation some thought.

“Dear heavens Spencer! No,” Mrs. Carlin replied surprised, hand over her heart.

“Am I in trouble?” she asked inquisitively.

“Nope, why do you need to be?” her mother said with a small laugh as she sipped her coffee.

“Seriously, Spence, what’s wrong with a mother trying to do something nice for her daughter huh?” Paula said, sitting at the table across from the teen.

“Nothing I guess,” Spencer replied, looking away and taking a bite of the pie.

“So…” Mrs. Carlin said after a moment of semi awkward silence.

“How was the first day? Anything interesting happen?”

“Why, what have you heard?” Spencer replied quickly and defensively.

Before her mom could respond she added, “Just kidding mom. You shoud’ve seen your face.”

Paula Carlin exhaled and looked visibly relieved.

“Anyway it was fine.” Other than almost getting into a accident this morning.

“Just fine huh? How were classes? Make any new friends?” Mrs. Carlin asked.

"They were the usual..” Boring as hell. “And actually I did meet this one person interesting person.”

“Really?” Paula asked, her interest peaking. “What’s his name?”

“His?” Spencer asked with a slight frown. “What makes you think it’s a guy?”

“Oh I don’t know, just this face you made when you were saying you met someone. I’m sorry, girl?”

“Well yeah. She’s new to King. She seems pretty cool though,” the teen said, finished her apple pie, and standing up to walk her dishes to the sink.

“That’s great Spence, glad you’re making new friends. Never can have too many of those,” Paula replied, talking another sip of coffee quietly, still sitting at the kitchen table.

“Yeah, guess you’re right,” Spencer said with a smile. “Thanks for the pie. I’m gonna start on the homework.”

And with that, the blue eyed girl turned and left the kitchen, walking up to her room, leaving her mother there to sit alone, just her and a coffee named Folgers.

Meanwhile a certain brunette was just pulling into an empty driveway.

She pulled her car into the three car garage, and walked into the mansion that she called home.

Ashley plopped down on the black leather couch in the living room and turned on the flatscreen.

She watched the local news channel for a few minutes. Some story about a spoiled ass King kid was on. Apparently she had lost her prize winning show dog, Nancy.

    Wow, because that’s news worthy.

The brunette’s cell phone went off, she picked it up.

“Hello?” she said into the receiver.

“Hey Ashley,” the voice replied on the other end. “Nice to hear your voice again.”
