Paula cleaned up the cut and placed a band-aid over the top of it. “Mommy, it still hurts.”
“Well it’s going to sweetie. Just because there is a band-aid on it doesn’t make it go away.”
“Kiss it and make it better.” The little blonde girl pouted. Paula pressed her lips gently over the band-aid and noticed the happiness in her daughter. “All better,” Spencer said with a smile.
“Now how does a kiss make everything better?” Paula asked.
“Because you’re my mommy and I love you.” Spencer explained. Paula’s heart lifted and then melted. She wrapped her daughter in a hug hoping to never lose that kind of relationship with her daughter.

But she did loose that kind of relationship with her daughter. Back then things were simple. She would kiss the places that hurt, she would tell her that her pet guinea pig ran away and everything would be okay again.
When Spencer was young, she always wanted to know how things worked and why. Like why the sun came out in the morning but hid in the nighttime or why lightning bugs only lit up on their butts. Paula never expected her daughter to want to know what it was like to be gay, or why her own mother couldn’t except it.
Ben left and made his way towards the lobby that Spencer was in. He didn’t know how he was going to say it. He had to tell people bad news everyday, but the thing was he had no emotional attachment to these people. Spencer was like a daughter to him and he knew that she was going to break down. Ben wondered if he would be able to pick up the pieces.
“Spencer, we need to talk.” Ben said cautiously. Spencer turned around and gave him a questioning look. Knowing that if Ashley’s name came up Spencer would either tune it out, or flip out. He needed to say what happened first. “There was a girl that was hit by a car. She is blacked out and I am going to stay with her to make sure everything goes okay.”
“So you’re staying late?” Spencer asked. “It’s cool; can I borrow money for a cab?”
