Since Birth – (Chapter: 25: Cause & Effect)

I look ahead to see Ashley with Emily. This can’t be happening. Mack just…he overanalyzes things, but he’s never right about them. He has to be wrong about this too.

We’ve been skating for a while and my feet are starting to hurt. The song ends.

    Aiden: “Spencer I’m tired.”

Spencer: “I wanna skate!” she yells pulling my hand.

Aiden: “WELL I DON’T!!” I say snatching my hand away and skating out of the rink.

I go and sit on the bench by the lockers. I take off the skates and put my head in my hands. Where the hell is Mack?! I look up and Spencer’s standing in front of me, leaning against the wall around the rink with her head hanging.

Aiden: “Spencer…what was that?” I ask cautiously.

Spencer: “Nothing.” she says in a low voice.

Aiden: “Well, it didn’t seem like nothing to me.” she just looks away. “What’s with you?”

She doesn’t look at me. She’s looking at the skating rink. I can see her eyes following Ashley.

Aiden: “What’s going on between you and Ashley?” I ask hesitantly. This gets her attention.

Spencer: “What?! Nothing…we’re friends.” she says defensively.

Aiden: “You’ve been watching her all night. I don’t watch my friends like that. I’m not that stupid, I know there’s something up with you and her.”

Spencer: “Nothing’s up …” She says while looking down then shifts her weight to the opposite foot.

Aiden: “Spencer…do you…like…Ashley?” I ask hesitantly. She hangs her head. Her eyes go from me, to the floor.

    Spencer: “Um…” she says quietly.

Aiden: “Ok…let me rephrase that. Are you…are you in love with her? Do you want to be with her, like you’re with me?” she says nothing, she just slides down the wall and turns her head to the side, not looking at me. I see a tear roll down her cheek.

Aiden: “You don’t love me?” my eyes begin to water. She looks up at me.

Spencer: “No, Aiden I do…” she moves in front of me, putting her hands on my knees.

Aiden: “But do you love me more than you love Ashley?” she looks away from me. My tears fall. I push her hands off of me and stand.

Aiden: “You love a girl, more than you love me.” I say pacing and pushing my fingers through my hair.

Spencer: “She’s my best friend.” she says weakly.

Aiden: “A best friend who you’re in love with!” I say, trying to keep from shouting too loud.

Spencer: “Aiden…I still love you.” she says looking up at me, tears clouding her eyes. She doesn’t love me like I want her to. Why does this hurt more than I thought it would? Then it hits me…

Aiden: “No, Spencer…you-you don’t understand. I did, I-I loved you.” I say through my erratic breathing.

Spencer: “I-I’m sorry…I love you t-” I cut her off.

Aiden: “No! You’re not getting it, you’re not grasping the concept…I am in love with you! Do you know how it feels to love someone and not have them love you back?!!” I yell, pacing. Tears falling faster than they have ever fallen in my life. I’m really not trying to cause a scene, but there are people looking.

Spencer: “Yea, I think I know very well how that feels!” she says bitterly.

Aiden: “No! You just-you don’t okay?! She loves you back Spencer! She loves you back…” I breathe out, frozen in my spot. She’s quiet for a long time.

    Spencer: “Aiden…”

I cover my face with my hands, and bring them down over my nose and mouth, looking at her. I finally let go and sob, my hands still over my nose and mouth.

Spencer: “Aiden, talk to me.” She steps towards me, I back away, wiping my eyes erratically.

Aiden: “I can’t-I can’t- I can’t deal with this right now!” I say shaking my head. It’s hard to think. My thoughts are becoming all jumbled. I just walk away.
