Why Superman Could Never Find a Phone Book – (Chapter: 1: Was Lois Lane right or left-handed?)
Diary Entry:
April 3, 2005:
Same as yesterday. S.C. is sitting in row 5, aisle 2, seat 5. Two seats to my left and then one seat forward. Her hair has been blocking most of her face today, but we did make eye contact when I feigned “accidentally” dropping my pen in the aisle, but ended up smacking her in the back of the head. I knew I should have worn my glasses today. She seemed to have been glaring at me, but I couldn’t really tell. However, her strategic desk placement the past few days leads me to believe she is most likely madly in love with me. She’s biding her time, slowly making her feelings known.
Let’s review the evidence:
1. Yesterday, she looked directly at me in the quad and giggled. But then I realized she was on her cell phone. However, she was probably talking to someone about how hot I am and was embarrassed I caught her in the act. I don’t think she noticed the back of my skirt was stuck in my underwear before I did.
2. Mrs. Berlin assigned her to be my lab partner. Thus, fate. Even Mrs. B knows our love has no bounds.
3. She gave me a purple My Little Pony bracelet at my 5th grade birthday party: a tangible symbol of her undying love.
4. She asked me to do her bio homework last week, which is so obvi——
“Ms. Davies?!”
“Huh?”
She looks up from her notebook and spies a roomful of eyes staring back at her. Giggles and snickers filter sporadically throughout the room. Ashley can feel her eyes on her face; two seats to the left, and one seat forward, the curtain of her hair threatening to dance further into Ash’s peripheral vision. She has to stab her hand with a pen to keep from looking her way.
“Ms. Davies, so sorry to take you away from your personal writing time, but would you please answer the question?”
Her upper teeth find her lower lip and begin to chew away, threatening to gnaw through the epidermis; her heart is thumping so loudly she’s sure Mr. Baldwin in room 13C can hear it. And he’s deaf in one ear. Or blind in one eye, she can’t remember. The giggling continues as her eyes dart around the classroom looking for some clue as to what the hell Professor Gimlet is talking about. Sweat begins to form a thin layer across the girl’s forehead and she feels a drop slide down the back of her right leg, free from the tight crevasse behind the upper leg and thigh. Panic is setting in, but she fights it.
