Bette walked into the woods with a deep sigh. She loved taking these light strolls in the forest of Westland. She was the forest guide anyways, no one knew the place more than her. She wore her casual attire. He green shorts and her matching shirt that didn’t cover her stomach. They were of the same material as her moccasins.
She stopped dead in her tracks when she realized she had passed the border. “Shit,” she muttered looking around to her surroundings. She had guided people through this part of the forest so she knew her way, but she didn’t know exactly everything that was in the area, it was too close to the boundary.
Bette looked forward to the transparent green wall that had separated Westland from the magical land of Midland. “I hate magic,” Bette muttered walking away from the boundary. She had heard stories about the land in between Westland and Midland. In between the walls of the boundaries was the underworld. No one had ever come out alive because the dead had tempted them, and once you go into the underworld you become part of it.
Bette shuddered at the thought and continued to walk back to the other side of the border. She stopped when she saw a small vine. She gasped loudly and leaned down to get a closer look. It looked like the decorative cover of the book her father made her memorize. Bette will never understand why her father forced her to read, memorize, and recite this book about rules of the magical world.
She remembered at six years old reading for countless hours in the forest, then burning the book once it was memorized. She remembered her father telling her, “you are the book, now. Never forget it, Bette.”
Bette smiled at the memory of her father, he must still be napping back at the cottage. She reached down to pick up the vine that brought on the memory and yelped when the vine suddenly grew fangs and latched onto her hand.
