    Driving — Chapter 17

Bette lay face down on the massage table while a massage therapist traveled over the map of tension that was her back. Bette groaned every time the therapist found a knot, but otherwise she was quiet. Her mind was on Tina and the rambling, jumbled, drunken message from her that Bette found on her voicemail this morning. Bette was infuriated that she slept through the call. I am never putting that God-damned phone on vibrate again, she fumes in her head. Ow, she groans as another knot is kneaded in her back. She had listened to the voice message at least six times, trying to get every word, but towards the end she could only catch bits and pieces of what Tina said. She is sure she heard, I wish you were there, I want to talk to you everything is so fucked up. Its not simple its not what I wanted. She thinks she heard I miss you at the end and her heart is holding on to that.
The letter she had written last night and mailed this morning was on its way. It would arrive on Tinas doorstep tomorrow morning and Bette was fretting about it, despite the phone message. Tina had not been receptive to her phone calls or flowers. What if she woke up, sobered up, and didnt want to talk to Bette after all? What if she didnt accept the letter? What if she read it and never responded, never called? Oh God, Bette thought, That would be the worst case scenario. She felt that she had bared her soul in that letter and she wanted to know that Tina would at least answer her. But there was no guarantee and that thought was tormenting her.
After her sunrise yoga class, her spa breakfast and her massage, Bette was as mellow as she could hope to be without ingesting substances of some kind. Nevertheless, patience was not a strong suit of Bettes and neither was giving up control, yet both were required of her now. Bette was trying to keep in mind what Kit had said last night on the phone: Its a big hurt and its gonna take time to heal.

    3. I just caught up on your story and am surprised I missed it all this time. You’ve painted real emotions for both of these characters, and I hope you continue the story more frequently, now that I’m hooked.
