    Fly Away – Chapter 3

Tina sat in front of her dressing table, slowly brushing out her hair. When she was little, one thing her mother always did for her was to brush her hair until her scalp tingled. She liked that feeling. She twisted her hair up into a bun and stood up. Time for chores. If she could do nothing else, she could keep the house prohibitively clean.

She scrubbed the bathroom, vacuumed, polished silver, changed the sheets. As she worked, she thought of Eric and how they’d parted that morning – almost just like every other morning, really. Breakfast, a kiss goodbye, telling each other to have a good day. But there was something in Eric’s eyes that she didn’t recognize. It wasn’t anger or hurt, it was unreadable.

Maybe he was worried. She had wanted to be left alone, and Eric had given her space. Maybe now he was finally realizing that he should have done something sooner, been a little more involved. Maybe that’s what she had been needed all along, instead of distance.

Tina hadn’t been out of the house in two months. She hadn’t felt like going anywhere or seeing anyone. It wasn’t her intent to shut herself off from the world, but she had no complaints, not really – except for last night, when those women across the street caught her eye. She’d felt a twinge of something then, and now she was able to identify it. She missed being normal. She missed her old self. If only it would be possible to go back in time, before the pregnancy. If she could be herself again, before a hole was ripped into her heart and soul. But that was impossible. She had to find a way forward, a way back in spite of everything.

Eric wanted her to try. Maybe she couldn’t accompany him to his boss’s party, but there had to be something she could do. Something small, some modicum of progress. Tina felt herself at a crossroads; she could either move on or slip further away. A deliberate choice had to be made. And Tina knew that the further she slipped away, it would be that much harder to come back. To live again. To be something more than this empty shell. But where was she going to begin? Such an all-encompassing goal – basically getting her life back – seemed so overwhelming.

    1. I hope Tina will find a way to pull herself out of this rut very soon. It’s sad to see her this pathetic. Time to break away from the doldrums, Mrs Chambliss! Thank you for sharing this new story, omalley. I’m sure that at some point things will be better for Tina and she’ll finally get back on her feet. =)

    2. its time for tina to start living again… lets hope her meeting bette will help and she does go over her house later on… i have a feeling eric will be working late and maybe that’s a reason she gets dressed and goes over… well lets hope…pps

    3. Maybe this is the impetus Tina needs to get herself together and start living again. She should get showered and cleaned up and go to Bettes’ party, she just might enjoy herself a little with others her age. Great chapter. Thanks for posting.

    4. Wow…this is a Tina that I never thought I would read. She’s a sad shell of what she could be. I can’t wait to read about her growth…and become the wonderful Tina we all know and love…strong-powerful-compassion-loyal-sexy.
