    Heart-Shaped Box, Ch. 10

Dana rifled through her closet, nervously searching for something to wear. She pulled out a blue sundress, then she shook her head and threw it over a chair, remembering the lecture Alice and Shane had given her when she tried to wear it on her first date with Lara. That had seemed to be ages ago, in a whole different world.

Finally she settled on a white pantsuit with a light pink shirt. Casual and *****, yet dressy at the same time. After a touch-up of her makeup and a quick debate over shoes, she grabbed her purse and headed outside.

Dana started up the Subaru, ruefully remembering how much she’d had to spend on cabs lately. Add to that the repair costs for the Subaru, and Dana could have practically hired her own chauffer.

She arrived at the restaurant within several minutes, and nervously sat in the car for a moment. Working up her nerve, she strode inside the building, looking around. Alice had told her to look at the corner table by the window. Seeing it, and noticing someone was sitting there, but blocked from view by a waiter, Dana headed over.

“Hi…Shane?” Dana was surprised and confused to find herself looking down at Shane.

Shane glanced up at her, her brow crinkling in confusion. “Dana, what are you doing here?”

“Funny, I was about to ask you the same thing,” Dana replied, puzzled.

“I’m so sorry, you guys. Let me explain,” a voice interrupted them as Alice breezed by Dana and threw herself into a chair. “I accidentally made plans with both of you. I tried calling you, Shane, but I couldn’t get in touch with you.”

“I had my phone off,” Shane explained. “This girl I met last week won’t stop calling.” She stood up. “You two have fun. I can tell I’m interrupting something here.”

Dana glared at Alice at that last comment, obviously realizing Alice had run her mouth again. Seeing the pleading look from Alice, Dana softened. “It’s okay, Shane, you can stay.”

“No, no, it’s cool. I’ve got plans with this hot little redhead later, anyway. You two have fun. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do,” Shane drawled, wiggling her eyebrows suggestively.
