Heart-Shaped Box, Ch. 12
Dana arrived home after practice, feeling exhausted but finally feeling optimistic toward the Alice situation, and life in general. The red light on her answering machine blinked insistently, and she listened to her messages while moving about the kitchen, preparing a snack.
Minutes later, Dana stood in front of the answering machine, stunned. The machine had been full, and every message was from Tonya. The messages alternated between begging Dana to take her back, and cursing and threatening Dana’s life.
She picked up the phone. It was time to put a stop to this now. If a restraining order was what it took, so be it.
Shane sat slumped in a chair at work, waiting for her next client, who was evidently running late.
She had just talked to Bette, who had explained about her and Tina’s possible reconciliation. Shane was thrilled at this news. The two of them together gave her hope. Shane knew that if they could weather this storm, perhaps the world would be right again and anyone could have a chance at love. Including herself.
Shane sighed. She hated to admit it, but she was getting lonely. Her bed-hopping, seductive ways had been fun while it lasted, but it was getting old fast. She was coming to a point in her life where she wanted a constant companion to love her for who she really was, and to support her when she needed it. Someone to always be there for her. It was starting to seem attractive to Shane; the idea of waking up next to the same person each morning and even, perish the thought, settling down.
Maybe this was why she’d been feeling unexplained pangs of jealousy over Dana and Alice’s burgeoning relationship. They were finding each other. They had each other, and Shane had no one, leaving her feeling left out. Shane felt a sudden pang as she pictured the two of them kissing. Jealousy over their new relationship, that’s all it was…right? She didn’t have feelings or anything for one of them, did she?
Shane almost laughed out loud at the thought. That was ridiculous. She was interrupted by her thoughts by the arrival of the client. A very attractive client, she noted quickly and appreciatively. Shaking her head, Shane got to work.
