I Forgot to Breathe (rewrite)-Chapter 1
Chapter 1
The Project
"This project is ridiculous!" Alice whined holding the prompt in the air.
"Mrs. Buckley gave us the hardest one!" Shane agreed.
"It’s cause we’re in your group," I said, "sorry."
"Nah she was always like that with us," Tina said smiling broadly at me.
My heart skipped a beat at the sight of her smile and I almost blushed so I averted my gaze. They didn’t know me enough to read me well but Tasha and Carmen knew instantly and gave me a knowing smile.
"I think she knows we’re lesbians, that’s why she gives us the hardest ones," Helena said looking up from her notebook, which according to everyone was a cookbook she was writing.
"Hey not everyone’s a lesbian," Dana said defensively.
The room broke out in giggles and Alice said with a scoff, "you are so gay!"
"Hey! Shut up!" Dana snapped.
"Fine I understand your need to protect your reputation because of tennis," Alice said, "deny it to the world! But don’t deny it to us."
"One day you have to get out of the closet Dane," Shane said.
"I’m not a lesbian," Jenny said, "but she gives me hard assignments too."
"It’s cause your Jewish baby," Tim said, "I guess I get the hard ones cause I’m a white guy dating a Jewish girl."
"Ahh technically you’re a lesbian too!" Carmen said laughing.
"What cause I like women?" Tim said, "then all straight men are lesbians."
"No, you’re in another class cause all your friends are lesbians!" Carmen said.
"She’s saying if you like women and all your friends are lesbians, then you are a lesbian!" Tasha said laughing.
"I feel like I fit in more now," Tim said smiling.
"Okay guys we should concentrate on our project," Alice said.
"So let’s divide into smaller groups and focus on one aspect then put it all together," Tina said.
"You’re so smart," I said with a smile.
"Warning, Porter smile," Tasha whispered so only me and Carmen could hear. Carmen chuckled and nodded her head.
"Okay how do we do this?" Shane said everyone completely unaware except Tina who was eyeing me curiously.
"I say we write numbers on some papers and whoever has the same numbers is in the same group," Dana suggested, "hey Helena give us a piece of paper."
