If I Fall: Chapter 20
Chapter 20
Alice pushed through the bathroom door to exit as quickly as she could. Such force should have been used to get out of the bathroom in time to see her girlfriend’s band perform. However, the real reason for Alice’s haste was to get herself out of that encounter with Dana, safely taking the high road, before she changed her mind and became putty in the athlete’s hands. History told her that she never did quite bode well in such situations…situations in which Dana stood so close, giving her that undeniable look of desire, and leaving Alice breathless in its aftermath. There was also this fierce internal struggle that the writer seemed to grapple with in order to leave a situation like that before her body was moving independently of her brain. It took every ounce of resolve in her to fight off the intense gravitational force that seemed to always pull her closer to Dana until their lips were pressed against one another’s and their hands fumbled along the contours of the other’s body. It took just about everything Alice had, and she was exhausted from trying so hard to resist Dana asking her…no begging her, for a second chance.
And it wasn’t as if Alice didn’t like the sound of that. Her body tingled with excitement at the thought of Dana being hers once again. But what sounded utopian in theory wasn’t all that perfect in reality. Dana may be convinced that she wanted Alice back now, but what happens when the going inevitably gets tough again? Dana was never all that graceful under pressure, and the same could be said when her relationships hit rough waters. Instead of standing together and working on things, she’d bailed. And Alice was convinced that she was bound to do that again. No, this time around she needed someone who she could count on, someone who she knew would stick. She needed to be safe, even if that meant living without the kind of once-in-a-lifetime love she found before in her best friend. She figured she could learn to live without it…after all, there were many people out there who never had the chance to experience that sort of all-consuming, life-altering, mind-blowing love at all. At least she could say she had it once. And if keeping her heart safe meant that she’d never get to touch that sort of love again, so be it. She could live without it if she had to. Especially if it meant avoiding being put through the proverbial wringer once again when she found herself abandoned and alone like she was sure to be if she put her heart in Dana’s hands once more. Besides, love was just an exploitative word people used to excuse their deviant behavior anyway, and Alice was sure she could fill her life with other things to keep herself happy. And even if it was real, Alice had it once and she should just be content with that, right?

As promised, I have returned, so huzzah or some other such thing. To start with, I must have skipped over your disclaimer this morning…I read it and didn’t stop laughing for a good five minutes. Thinking about it now is making me giggle again. I’m glad I don’t have any roommates, or I’d be off to the loony bin for sure. As for the story…well, I hope you’re being serious about the angst letting up soon. Sure, I can be a drama whore in my story, but it’s usually only for a chapter or two. Alice needs to get over herself. I mean, yeah, protecting yourself is all well and good, but you only get so far in life by observing it going on around you. And Dana needs to prove herself with more than just words. (Sidenote…when they finally do reconcile, can it be on a tennis court? The tennis dresses make me drool). And I’ll be glad to take Jules off Al’s hands when she goes back to the love of her life. Oh, and I’m glad somebody agrees with me on the Mariah thing. The very idea makes me cringe, but I have a friend who swears up and down that she’s actually pretty good. Whatev. Okay, now that I’ve babbled your life away, I’ll leave this with a plea for you to post again soon. I still heart this story even though it makes me want to tear out my hair.
forget what muted said about the angst! we LOVE the angst… how can we have steamy, tension filled bathroom moments without angst? don’t hurry it- they’ve only just now started admitting the problem- that ought to be good for at least a few more chapters! : ) loved the scene with Bette too–“The unfamiliar feeling of optimism was a welcome change, and it was as if Bette’s words lifted up a bit of the burden she’d be carrying around lately.” very nice Swis. Post soon.

Okay, I need to rush to my dead end job so I just skimmed this over, but it looks more than good. I’ll read it when I get home tonight and leave a much better, or at least more well-thought-out, comment then. Yay, you posted right after me! We rule.

So glad to see you updating this story. Feeling sorry for Dana but, yeah, she put herself in this position. Your writing is wonderfully easy to read and the whole story seems to flow so well – lovin’ it!
