If it is meant to be…Chapter 11

Bette unlocked the door to the gallery, looking up at the clock as she walked in. ‘It’s only 8:50am! Tina’s plane hasn’t even taken off yet.’ Bette sighed as she walked into the back of the gallery, where her office was. ‘Ok, it takes about five hours to get from New York to Seattle, then another hour to an hour and a half to get home from the airport…that means that even if she calls me as soon as she walks in the door, it will be around 3:30pm my time.’ Bette had sat down at her desk, just to stand right back up in order to pace the room. ‘What am I going to do? I miss her already.’ Fortunately, the phone rang, relieving Bette, for a couple of minutes as least, from ruminating over Tina’s departure from her life, again.

Tina laid her head back against her seat and closed her eyes. The plane had leveled off and they had just started a movie, so all three kids were happy with their headsets, eyes glued to the small screen. ‘Ok, if we land on time, and Dan is there to pick us up, we should be home by 12:30pm, Seattle time. Knowing the kids, they will all want to head to their rooms to go through the things they brought home with them, and to reacquaint themselves with their private spaces. That means I could call her at around 3:30pm her time.’ Tina continued on this line of thinking until she started to drift off. Right before she fell asleep, she wondered if she was going to call Bette as soon as she got home, because she didn’t want Bette to worry, or because…well…because she missed her already?

    ~ ~ ~

    3:20pm EST

Bette was trying to keep herself busy, but with miserable results. She had been circling the gallery over and over…tried looking at proofs given to her yesterday by the photographer she had met with…she had even walked down the street at lunch to do some shopping, something that normally would have held her attention for hours, but not today. Today, nothing had been able to take her mind off the fact that she had seen it when she looked at Tina…love. Granted she had also seen fear when she tried to kiss her, but Bette hoped that was just because Tina’s children were watching, not because Tina didn’t want her to kiss her. ‘*****, I almost blew it!’ Bette surprised herself by how much she wanted it to be true, what Susan had said about there still being love there. Bette looked up at the clock for about the fiftieth time today, chastising herself for getting so worked up about a phone call. ‘God, relax Bette. She’s just calling because you asked her to.’ Bette told herself that, but in reality, hoped that Tina was going to call her because…

Just then the phone rang. Bette let Milaine answer it. She didn’t want her to think anything was up by grabbing it first…which was ridiculous, because Bette had been driving Milaine crazy all day, pacing around the gallery.

    “MaBe?”

    “Yes Love?”

“Tina Kennard is on line one.”

Bette blew out the breath that she had been holding. “Thanks.”

Before picking up the phone, Bette shook out her hands to try and relax. “Tina, hi.”

Tina smiled into the phone. Bette had such a sensual voice, and over the phone…well…Tina kept smiling.

    “Tina?”

Tina, realizing she had yet to say anything, cleared her head and her throat. “Bette, sorry…hi. I was calling to let you know that we are home, safe and sound.”

Hearing Tina’s voice instantly made Bette feel almost giddy inside, and all of a sudden, she just wanted to sit back, twirl her hair and talk to Tina about all kinds of silly, unimportant things…’Jesus Porter, get a hold of yourself!’ Knowing that this was not the time, she settled for the more practical response. “Good. How was your flight?”

“Fine…uneventful. Thank God I am blessed with children who can easily entertain themselves. In fact, we just walked in the door about ten minutes ago, and all three are already ensconced in their rooms.” Tina stopped and took a deep breath, unsure if she should verbalize her thoughts. She couldn’t stop herself anyway, so why question it? “God Bette, I can’t believe that I am even having this conversation with you. It has been so long…my life is so different from how it was when we were together…so much has happened with us both…yet…calling you to let you know we are home safe, just seems so…”

“I know T.” Bette’s voice was soft, almost a whisper. “It seems so…normal…familiar…so right.”

    “Yes,” Tina whispered back.

Bette sat up, her voice now a little stronger. “So, last night at the restaurant, I asked you a question. Do you remember what it was?”

Tina closed her eyes, all of a sudden feeling afraid…knowing that how she answered this question, could and would change everything in her life…everything, including her relationship with her children. She couldn’t help but wonder if her children would turn against her if she followed her heart…but then remembered who they were as individuals, and knew that wouldn’t happen…hopefully.

Bette was getting worried. Tina hadn’t answered her. Should she repeat the question? She was just about ready to clear her throat to remind Tina that she was still waiting…

“Yes, I remember what the question was. You asked me, where do we go from here?”

“And?” Bette unconsciously held her breath.

“And…remember how I said I needed to put myself back out there?”

Bette’s stomach dropped. ‘Please don’t tell me she wants to start seeing other people…please.’ “Yes,” Bette choked.

“Well, I am hoping that’s what I was doing last night…by having dinner…with you.”

Bette lowered her head and rested her forehead against her desk, holding the phone against her ear. “Oh God T. It’s happening again.”

Tina’s stomach tightened and she frowned, not understanding. “Baby, what’s happening again?”

“You…you are happening again. When you walked into my gallery, it was instant…it was overwhelming…it was uncontrollable…it’s 22 years later, and I’m falling for you all over again.”

    4. Isn’t it ironic how Tina is worried what her children will think of her if she told them her true feelings. Talk about the shoe being on the other foot. Great, as always.

    5. Aww this is soo sweet! I’m glad they’re verbalizing their feelings to each other intstead of just being nervous about them. Yay!! How’s it going to work when they’re on two separate coasts though? I can’t wait to find out! Now I have sort of a weird question for you, Seahurst, but I’m curious Hehe How is MaBe pronounced? Is it like “maybe” or like “mah-bee”? Thanks! lol

    6. TiBetteShipper, it is pronounced mah-bee. As in Ma B for Bette, only said fast comes out MaBe. Figured that would be a good alternative when there are two moms…you don’t call them both Mom.
