If it is meant to be…Chapter 28

Bette’s tears were still flowing. But now they were tears of relief, because her guilt was disappearing, and she knew her heart was free to love Tina…and tears because even though after all these years, she was still madly in love with her first love…it was all right that she still loved and missed her second love, Nica.

She put her tea cup down and picked up the phone, an excitement overtaking her. She couldn’t believe that it was possible to cry and giggle at the same time, but that is exactly what she was doing. By now it was late, and she hoped that Tina wouldn’t mind her calling. Her fingers were trembling while she dialed the number.

“Hello?” Tina’s voice sounded groggy. She had gone to bed early, after spending an exhausting day in the sun with Bette.

“T?” Bette’s voice was soft, almost timid.

“Bette?” She looked over at the clock, and rubbed her face, seeing 11:09 shining at her in green indiglo. “Baby…what’s wrong?”

Bette felt a little bad about waking her up, but she wanted to hear Tina’s voice before she went to bed…she couldn’t help it.

Smiling into the phone, she spoke softly. “Nothing’s wrong T. I’m sorry I woke you, but I just wanted you to know that you were right when you told me not to worry…everything is going to be Ok.”

Now it was Tina’s turn to smile into the phone. “I take it your phone conversations went well?”

Bette chuckled. “Yes, I had a long talk with Leslie, and I am feeling much better. I’ll tell you all about it tomorrow…but I just wanted to tell you one thing before I went to bed.”

    “What’s that?”

Bette’s eyes filled with tears again, and with her voice shaking with emotion, she whispered, “I am in love with you Tina Kennard….passionately, hopelessly, in love with you.”

Tina could feel her body almost rising off the bed, she was feeling so light. It wasn’t that she had doubted Bette’s love for her…she knew they would figure out a way to be together somehow, but she had been a little worried about Bette’s guilt and how it was going to effect their relationship. But she could feel Bette’s heart opening up to her, just as she whispered those words…and she started to cry, because at that moment, she knew, without one doubt that her wish of waking up next to Bette was going to come true, and it wasn’t going to be just for one morning. They were going to get it right this time…they had to.

“Oh Baby, I love you so much.” Tina brought her finger up to hair, and without thinking started twirling it around. “Bette, I have loved you my whole adult life. I know now that I never stopped. It was always there, keeping me company, even when I didn’t know it…it was there.” Tina sighed into the phone. “I wish I was with you right now, so I could look into your eyes, feel your arms around me.”

Bette was now laying on the couch, tenderly holding the phone in her hands, wanting to hold precious the link between her and the woman she adored. “I wish you were here as well.” Bette chuckled…a deep throaty chuckle. “However, I have to admit that I don’t have the stamina that I use to, and all that sun and sand wore me out. Well, that and the fact that I have now shed enough tears to soak up half of this deluxe size box of Kleenex.”

“I know Baby, it’s Ok. I’m not going to even admit to what time I crawled into bed. Why don’t you get some sleep and I will be by in the morning around 9:30 to pick you up for breakfast?”

“Ok T. Sweet, sweet dreams Baby, and I’ll see you in the morning.”

    “Night Bette.”
