If it is meant to be…Chapter 57
“I brought something for you.”
Tina and Bette were in the bedroom, getting ready for bed, after just coming back from dropping Kit and Leslie off at their hotel. They had all enjoyed a quiet afternoon and evening, of hanging out, catching up and getting to know each other. At one point, Dani had shyly asked Milaine if she wanted to see her room, and when Milaine responded with such enthusiastic sincerity, it had warmed all their hearts. It was at that moment that Bette realized, that for as much as they thought that Tina’s children would enjoy having an older sister, it was Milaine whose excitement was bubbling over, with the prospect of finally having siblings. She had always been an only child…well, other than the times she was in a foster home with other children. But, she didn’t count those, as it seemed like she was never in one place long enough to form any attachments.
With Bette’s statement about having brought a present, a surge of anticipation raced through Tina’s body. Getting a present from Bette was always a good thing! She clasped her hands behind her back, and batting her eyes, starting swinging back and forth. “A present for little old me?”
Bette laughed at Tina’s attempt at being a shy, innocent young woman. “Yes, and I didn’t have to spend a dime.”
Tina stopped swinging at that statement. “You didn’t pay for it? What are you giving me…?” She smiled and caressed the beautiful necklace she was wearing around her neck. A necklace that Bette had worn for ten years, before giving it to Tina, so it could carry her locket. “You’re not going to give me another hand-me-down, are you?”
Bette arched her eyebrow and smiled, knowing that Tina was going to love her gift. “Well, actually…it is something that is already yours. You just…hmmm, forgot them, so…” Bette lowered her voice to a whisper. “I’ve been holding onto them for all these years…waiting…hoping that someday, they would find their way back to you.”
Sitting on the edge of the bed, Bette looked at Tina with such love and pride, that Tina’s breath caught in her throat. She looked down to see what Bette was pulling out of her suitcase, and she felt her own heart fill with a joy she thought was impossible to experience. “Oh my God, Bette…oh my God!” Her eyes filled with tears…tears of happiness…tears of sadness…but mostly, tears of complete fulfillment. “I thought they were lost forever,” Tina breathed out. She reached out and tenderly held up the beautiful silver frame, and stared into her own eyes, along with Bette’s, as they both beamed back out at her, obviously very happy, and very much in love…as they celebrated the day they had committed their hearts and lives to each other. Tina could feel the love emanating out at the viewer, the frame not able to contain the loving energy coming from these two women.
She looked over at Bette, whose tears were flowing unchecked, just from watching all the emotions play across her partner’s face. Bette reached back into her suitcase and brought out another framed picture. This one was of them laughing, and hugging each other in the pool, where they had both landed, after being thrown in fully dressed, by their friends on the day they had moved into their new house.
Tina started laughing through her tears, remembering Bette’s initial reaction to their friends idea of fun. She had come up from under the water, sputtering and growling…but couldn’t hold onto her irritation for more than two seconds, after she turned and saw Tina soaking wet and sputtering right beside her. The whole gang had started laughing, and then one by one, Alice, Dana, Shane and Kit, had jumped into the pool with all their clothes on as well, knowing this was a perfect way to break in the new pool, as well as show Bette and Tina, that their new home would always be filled with a family who loved them.
Next, Bette brought out a large photo album, filled to the brim with pictures…pictures, that represented seven years of a love, that would last both women their lifetime. She looked at Tina, her smile holding a touch of sadness.
“When we broke up, and we were dividing everything, I put this together for you. You kept saying that you were going to stop by and get them…but you never did. You would come and take other things, but these would always be sitting right where I left them, waiting for me.” Bette took a deep, slow breath. “My heart would break over and over again, every time I would come home and see that you had taken this or that, but never the pictures. Finally, when you told Alice you didn’t want me to know about your life, I gave up and put them in the closet. I was crushed that you didn’t want any memory of our life together. But still…I brought them with me to New York…hoping.” Bette looked at Tina, her eyes shining with love, her smile bright enough…to light up two lives. “I thought maybe you would like them now.”
Tina wrapped her arms around her lover’s neck, holding Bette’s head against her chest. Bette was hanging on tight, her arms around Tina’s waist. Neither woman said anything for a moment, both lost in memories, both lost in dreams of their future. Finally Tina loosened her hold on Bette and looked down at her. “Oh Baby…you thought right…you thought absolutely right.”

My heart broke right along with Bette’s as she told Tina how she felt when she would find the pictures still sitting where she left them. This story has had several instances that I could physically feel the emotion. Thanks for such a wonderful story.
I’m really glad you brought them back together.

Another premium chapter! I am a great believer in capturing moments with pictures. It is so wonderful to look back and remember the good times. 5 plus stars, again! Your writing is so fantastic. Love this story of a beautiful future for B & T.
I love the way you fill in the backstory. The details just take you right into the room with them
Thanks!
Ahh…the power of photographs. Nothing like having a split second of your life captured on film to remember the moment. I love that Bette kept them through the years even though it broke her heart to do so.
another fantastic chapter Seahurst!!!
I’m crying…I could feel the heartbreak Bette experienced 15 years earlier…Tina never taking the pictures…and now the joy of Tina taking them now…amazing Sea…you’re something else!
Oh my god, I could totally cry. :D This was…..it was just……*waves arms*…..it was…….*snaps fingers*……SOAP POISONING!!!
Wait. Sorry. That’s A Christmas Story. This, however. This was exquisite heartache, if there is such a thing. The image of their move in day, all of them in the pool and the happiness was amazing. Bette’s heartache as time went on almost killed me. But you were there to make it all better with their current relationship. You’re hands-down one of the best of the best on here. Thank you for sharing your talent, Sea. :D 5 stars!!
awwww….please write more and more often…i just love your story…THUMBS UP!!!
Wow what a sad chapter. Thank goodness I’ve been doing x-mas shopping to have a lighter heart right now. Excellent as always. catch the next one.
I can spell,it mirrors.
as usual- nicely done…
Love this story, picture are the mittow to your soul.So glad that Bette kept them all these years. Beautiful story,so glad that Melaine is fitting in.
I felt Bette’s heartache in this one. Perhaps it is because photography is a hobby and I believe sometimes photos allow us to see into someones soul. I really enjoyed this one Sea.
This is so sweet and thoughtful. It warms my heart that Bette is so thoughtful. This jesture is especially close to my heart because I love to take pictures and other than my children they are my most valuable possessions…it must have been so difficult for Tina to have left them and heartbreaking for Bette to find that they weren’t taken! This has always been one of my favorite stories and now it is at the top #1 for me.
Another sweet chapter. Great job
