If it makes you happy – Chapter 28

“I’m so sorry.” Bette apologized as she hurriedly entered her office twenty minutes later than planned.

Abby rose from the couch and moved to pull Bette into a hug that lasted a little too long to be considered friendly. “That’s perfectly fine as long as you’re willing to make up for keeping me waiting.” Abby said as she released Bette.

“And how exactly would I be able to do that?” Bette asked lightly as she raised an eyebrow.

“Clear your schedule, lunch is going to take more than an hour.” Abby replied as she held Bette’s steady gaze.

“As tempting as that is, you know I can’t just drop everything.” Bette countered before looking back at the pile of papers on her desk, “That’s what I need to be reviewing this afternoon.”

“Is there truly anything in that pile that can’t wait until tomorrow?” Abby asked before adding, “I’ll make it worth your while.”

With that, Bette lost all resolve. Her morning had been a series of hellish meetings and the knot in her right shoulder was a testament to her stress levels.

“What exactly did you have in mind?” Bette enquired as she moved to check the appointments in her calendar for the afternoon.

“On the chance that you’d say yes, I’ve made reservations at a restaurant just south of Zuma. I thought we could enjoy the fact that we’re in Southern California for the afternoon, maybe even remember what summers are for.” Abby answered with a lilt in her voice that left Bette defenceless.

Without further hesitation, Bette picked up the phone and asked James to clear her schedule for the afternoon.

Lunch had been an extravagant affair. The restaurant was built on the edge of a small cove and they were seated at a table with expansive views of the ocean. Bette soon learned that Abby had taken the liberty of ordering ahead and there was more fresh seafood than Bette had seen in years. Conversation flowed easily as they both avoided any topics that would involve Bette talking about Tina or Abby divulging how she had filled the time since they had split. Each woman knew that these things could not be dismissed forever, but for now it seemed possible for them to exist in a vacuum.

    1. OMG,what are you doing bette.let tina go if you want to be with abby.or let alice be alice have call bette and ask her what the hell are is she doing, and that tina knows that she is with the abby.PPS

    2. The best story i have read so far. You capture thier ways of dealing with conflicts in a delicate and honest way. The only thing i disagree on is that no matter what there will always either be a bette and tina….or they will end up single. Love is not as grey as we think it is

    3. OMG, please tell me Bette isn’t going to return to the bad choices of Candace the carpenter. If she doesn’t make some choices quickly there may be none left to make. My heart is breaking at the thought that Bette may throw everything with Tina and Angie away.

    4. Great story! Nice to read one that’s not all according to formula, and has some real life struggle. Look forward to reading where you take it. Thanks for writing.

    5. I dont like where this is going just because Bette being such a cheater doesnt sit well with me. But OK I will be happy to see where this is going none the less. Kissing IS cheating so whats left for Tina?

    6. Has Bette learned absolutely nothing? Gah, this is so frustrating. Because Abby tells her what she wants to hear. She wants to rebuild with Tina, but can’t help herself. Such a fickle heart.

    7. i hate abby now, she doesn’t play fair and bette is making a wrong choice…i don’t want another cheating bette either…if she wants to be with abby then she should’ve stop persuing tina so they can move one but not like this: saying one thing but doing another

    8. Dude, seriously. I’ve waited all this time for more cheating Bette? Maybe she’s not cheating and Abby’s all she wants. I hope T finds a nice woman for her.

    9. I keep forgetting to say: thank you for writing! Yeah, the fact that Bette let it get this far with Abby, running away instead of actually talking to Tina, is really crappy. This is the same Bette who was all “I love you Tina, I want you Tina” just a couple of chapters back. Ack.
