    CHAPTER FORTY SEVEN: Life And Everything In Between

     

    SATURDAY. Early morning. Porter Estate.

     

    Second best.

     

    Results of the recent midterms were released this morning.

     

    I, Mr. Perfect – the straight A student and the beast with the inhuman SAT score – was reduced to nothing more than second best.

     

    The top seed pulled down to the number two spot. Ouch.

     

    A sympathizing smile. That is all I get. “It’s okay, Mr. Porter. Try harder next time.” The old professor gave me a small pat on the shoulder before closing the door on my face.

     

    Second.. best..

     

    My mother, the old tyrant, is going to kill me when she finds out about this.

     

    I look down on the floor as I began to walk away from my Management professor’s office, shame engulfing me from within. Poor, poor me. I frown, pitying myself. A group of students laugh loudly behind me, enthralled by a story that one of their friends was sharing. Distraught and paranoid, I let myself believe that they were laughing at me – at my failure. “Agh!” I yell out, punching a nearby locker with all my might, effectively silencing the students behind me. My fist left a very remarkable dent on the locker but I didn’t notice that tiny detail – I was too preoccupied with the anger and resentment that was eating me up inside. Failure was never in my vocabulary until today.

     

    I hate it.

     

    I found myself walking back to the lecture room. The old Sociology professor didn’t show up today. That stupid, lazy old fart. His students took advantage of his absence and lingered a bit to finish papers and study for other subjects. With my luck, the guy who beat my ass was still in there. A fire ignited within me. I had to find this asshole and size him up – get to know him a bit. Employ father’s infallible strategy when new competitors crop up – study them and get to know their strengths and weaknesses – use the knowledge to my advantage.

     

    “Mel!” A high, lilting voice shouted out just when I was about to enter the classroom. Oh great, I exhaled loudly. I turn around and come face to face with bouncy Phyllis Adams. She’s in a few of my classes but I met the girl during my junior year when Lenny Kroll, one of my bestfriends, started dating her. Though I consider her my friend, she could also be a great pain in the neck. “I heard all about it. Are you okay?” She asked me, her eyes filled with pity. I hate it.

    16. I hope Melvin’s okay. If he had a heart attack, I hope he survives and will finally learn to listin to the murmurs of his heart. I’m happy for the “sisters'” reunion, Alice and Dana’s first public date and that Bette & Tina have agreed not to put on hold their romps in the soundproofed room.
