Lately: Part 5
These women had literally grew up together. Bette, Helena, Alice, and Dana met when they were two. They all met Tina when they were around ten. They were the core families that created a conglomerate, where they had different companies and foundations. There were The Porter-Peabody Galleries, The Peabody-Piezecki Recording Group, The Kennard-Peabody Tech Firm, The Peabody-Fairbanks-Porter Foundation, The Porter-Piezecki Law Firm, The Kennard-Piezecki Film Studio, and The Kennard-Porter Foundation for Funding the Arts. Through all this money-making, the friendships between the girls, at least four of them was pretty strong. Tina on the other hand, hung out with the straight kids of the other families involved in the conglomerate. The families all arranged for the same tutors to teach all of their kids. It was a twisted way to grow up—moving from city to city with the same group of people every couple of months—but it worked for them. It made them grow closer.
And that’s why it was so hard losing one of their own.
Two days after the memorial, Dana’s casket was lowered into the earth. Bette couldn’t feel her legs because Dana was her footing. Helena couldn’t feel her arms, because Dana was her strength. Alice couldn’t find her pulse, because Dana was her heart. That was all it took for Helena. Watching as her best friend was finally laid to rest and watching the love of her life crying in the arms of another woman was all to much for her. She could go back to London and forget all about Bette.
But it would be really difficult to forget about Bette.
Or she could stay and talk to Bette. Maybe to look for closure or maybe to convince Bette that she was the one for her, not Tina.
The afternoon after the funeral, Alice and Helena sat inside The Planet. Alice was drinking coffee, Helena had tea.
"You English folks and your tea." Alice teased.
"And you Yankees and your coffee." Helena smiled back at Alice.
"How long are you staying, Helena?"
"As long as you need me to stay." It was time for Helena to make amends. Maybe it was too late, but better late than never.
"I’d like for you to stay as long as possible. We have to stop doing this to each other, you know. Shutting each other out. It’s not doing anything but causing us pain. I wish we could go back in time and relive all the stupid parties we had."
