Lest I Forget (3)
She said no, the first time I asked her to marry me. She didn’t say it right away, simply because our friends were there, still watching the movie with no idea I’d just put the ring into her hand. She just looked at me for a long time.
I think the group sensed that something was up, but no one asked. I was grateful for it. Ever since I’d come home, the questions had seemed to be never ending. While I understood their desire to understand, I started to hate the constant questions after awhile. This time, it was as if they sensed it, and without Alice or I saying a word they started to get ready to leave.
There were plans made for later in the week, and before we knew it, Alice and I were alone in the apartment. She was still looking at me, and for one of the first times in all the years we’d been friends I couldn’t read her expression. She looked happy, but there was something behind it, and I could feel my hands sweating as I looked back at her.
In the end, there was nothing else for me to do but ask. “Will you marry me?” I managed to say in a sort of odd murmur, barely recognizing my own voice. Alice graced me with a grin, but she sighed. She didn’t really need to say what she said next. I’d already interpreted that sigh as “no.”
“It’s not that I don’t want to, Dana,” she started, looking at the floor instead of meeting my eyes. “I just can’t, not right now.”
I tried to process what she’d said. I knew she loved me, so it couldn’t have been that…or could it? My self-esteem took a nose-dive as I sat there with her. “Do you…not love me anymore?” I asked, terrified that her answer would be yes.
“No, baby, don’t ever think that!” she said loudly, surprising us both. “Sorry. I just…Dana, I love you with everything I am, okay? I want you to know that.”
“Then why won’t you marry me?” I asked in a whisper. As hard as I tried to keep myself from crying, I could feel a tear running down my cheek. “I know I hurt you before, Al, but I promise it’ll never be like that again. If you’re scared I’ll leave you, please don’t be. I couldn’t if I tried…”

Yay! Cliffs of Moher! MT, how come you always manage to put something I love in your stories? I’m totally in love with Ireland, and I’ve got a pending backpacking trip all over Connemara, just beautiful!! ( Hummm…might as well propose to my boyfriend…? …i think not…not there yet :). Anyway, Am I the only one who prefers Dana’s first proposal? It was so shy and sweet… and unexpected!hehe I loved it. Well, just like nurseGemma, eager for another danish sneak peek!
Okay this chapter gave me that warm and fuzzy Danish feeling. I love that Dana decided to propose for the second time in Ireland, and it seemed just about picture perfect. Well done MT!
I love the story. I absolutley love it.
Yay i’m first! Well it is lovely yet bittersweet story as we already know but another fantastic chapeter. Feels as though we’re seeing the conclusion of ‘You’ 30 odd years down the line! Can’t wait to hear the kid’s stories and that nurse is fab isn’t she?!? ;)
I love this story of an old alice and dana reliving thier younger days and what a better way to read it just wish we could have seen it in the show but nevermind at least we have you to let it great update please post soon
Love It! Glad Dana went with the proposal in Ireland!!! WOW! I love this! I can see how this can flow for you! Wonderful!
hey, loved the proposal, I had it practically in front of my eyes, the fantastic view and all included. Very romantic. Thanx for the compliment, my english is ok I guess, but now and then I realize that my vocabulary could be a bit bigger.
That proposal was so sweet. Another great chapter. Such a great mix of the happier times with saddness of the present. It’s great!
Loved the proposals and Alice’s reactions. It is soooo Jenny to just give Alice’s story to her editor. One of the things I like about this story and “You” is that the girls work at their relationship and on their own mental health. I went to Ireland many years ago and can’t think of a better place for a proposal. How romantic that Dana had the limo show up to take the right to the plane. I can’t wait for the next chapter! Thanks!
