Chapter 8b
Dana had hardly fastened her seatbelt when Alice said excitedly, as if she’d just remembered, "Hey Dane, how was the interview? Did you charm the pants off her, or what?"
Dana rolled her eyes indulgently and said, "I managed to not be a complete ass. The girl was actually really nice."
Alice was nodding passively until Dana added cheekily, "And she was pretty."
Narrowing her eyes playfully, Alice replied, "Pretty, huh?"
Fluttering her eyelashes coquettishly, Dana responded, "Very pretty. Blonde. Southern. Y’know, the typical All-American dream girl."
Alice questioned with feigned sincerity, "Should I be worried? Maybe I should start scoping out my rebound girl."
To Alice’s utter horror, Dana merely nodded and continued to drive, a grim smile on her lips. Even though Alice had been joking, both girls were now feeling almost desperate insecurity for different reasons. Dana because hearing Alice joke about rebounding continued to feed the doubts inside her regarding the underlying issue in their relationship. Maybe Alice really would tire of living life in the closet.Maybe she wasn’t enough to justify keeping Alice there. And Dana didn’t think she could bear seeing Alice move on with someone else.
Alice was feeling queasy for a dissimilar but related insecurity. Dana’s sudden silence was scaring her because she hadn’t actually told Alice there would be no need to scope out a rebound girl.
Luckily, Alice felt compelled to press the issue.
Swallowing her fear, Alice continued shakily, "I was just kidding, Dane. You know that I’m in this. Right?"
Dana looked over at Alice quickly, relief blazing clearly in her blue eyes. They were glistening and Alice felt the tension pouring out of her own body as Dana grasped Alice’s hand and said, "I know you are, baby. I know."
Alice brought Dana’s hand to her lips, kissing the palm tenderly before glancing back at the road. She was untested when it came to relationships and openness and honesty so she wanted to make sure she got through it.
"Dane, I know this is your first real relationship and that you think you’re so new at this but I feel like you’re already so much better at it than me."
Dana had stopped the car moments before and they now sat in the dimly lit parking lot of a grocery store. The tennis player had listened to Alice intently; about to interrupt when the musician continued softly, "I don’t always know what I’m doing, Dane. And sometimes my fears get the best of me and I freeze up or shut people out when I don’t mean to. But I think- I think this is the most special thing I’ve ever been a part of and I don’t want to fuck it up so I think we just have to keep talking. We have to not be afraid to tell each other when we’re scared. Okay?"

(Love it)3 These 2 are absolutely adorable. I was so happy to see them talking about their issues. Let the game begins, Operation Hellcat Picasso! I hope Alice wouldn’t get a cold and ruined her concert. From now on, A would not be allowed to fall asleep in the living room without a blanket or D by her side. And that is an order (just joking). fripster, btw I will not be able to comment if you post again at 3am EST. I need to get up at 8 tomorrow. So pardon me if I skip one. Until next time, have fun.
You are posting faster than I can comment. I love it!! This chapter really emphasized that no matter how much more “experience” Alice has, they both have very little real relationship experience. Loved the wake-up trick, Operation Hellcat Picasso, etc, etc… You do an amazing job balancing the drama parts with the sweet and funny.
so youre totally spoiling us (me) with such frequent posting…not like im complaining or anything, i absolutely adore this story. but im just hoping that u keep up the way u have been b/c im so addicted.
Hey frip you sure did post super fast,,LOL,,,but I liked that. I am really like this Dana and Al, plus adding Helena in as Als best bud. and now let the fun begin with getting Helena and Bette together….Great chapter frip.
These two women are soooooo adorable!!!! I really wish that Dana was still on the show. Anyways, is Alice getting sick??? Let’s hope not, but then Nurse Dana will be at the rescue. I can’t wait to see what will happen when Alice and Dana try to hook Helena up with Bette. This should be very, very interesting…PPS
You are a Danish writing genius!! I loved the talk they had in the car and how each one is starting to open up about how they are feeling. Alice’s speech was very heartfelt. I loved the wake up trick Dana used on Alice, how funny. I hope Alice doesn’t get too sick with the show coming up and all. Keep up the good work and the quick posts.
Seriously, child. Do you EVER sleep??? I feel like a tard only doing one post every week or two, sheesh. That and the fact that I barely ever manage to leave comments for you tells me that I need to quit working/studying so much and seek out a way to pay bills by fanfic. This chapter was adorable sweet. I love the way you write these two their relationship is so stable and mutually loving despite both of them having uncertainties. And since you don’t like it when I say your story is better than mine, I’ll refrain and leave it with nothing more than “this is freaking awesome.”
