Lifeline – Bette and Tina, Chapter 5

Shane stirred, vaguely aware of a presence in the doorway of the small waiting room.  She rubbed her eyes with the palms of her hands, straightening in her chair.  Glancing at Kit slumped in the seat beside her, she nudged her awake gently, looking toward the figure in blue standing before them.  Bette slowly rose to her feet as the man entered.  He looked at all of them in turn, sensing that Bette was the person to speak to, and began softly.

    “Are you..?”

“Bette Porter,” she confirmed, taking a step toward the dark-haired doctor.  He was young, with intense blue eyes and a mop of wavy hair.  Bette thought he looked like a college student, apart from the tired eyes and slouching posture that aged him at least a decade.  His face was kind and intelligent, she surmised, waiting for him to speak again.

Kit sat up, more alert now, and she and Shane awaited the doctor’s report along with Bette, desperately hoping it would not be bad news.  The man was obviously exhausted.

He sat down in the chair next to the one Bette had just arisen from and indicated that she sit too, speaking so quietly that the three women leaned toward him, their eyes fearful, bodies braced for the worst.

“The patient,” he began, referring to the chart in front of him.

“Tina,” Bette corrected, wanting to hear her name, needing to say it.

He looked up, and noting the fear in her eyes, remembered to be mindful that this was his patient’s wife.  “Tina,” he amended, meeting Bette’s gaze, “is still unconscious, which is exactly what we want at this point.  Her brain is swollen, which necessitated making an incision in the skull that would allow for the swelling.”

Everyone in the room noticed Bette’s quick intake of breath and glanced at her briefly, attempting to gauge her expression, which was deeply pained but holding up, for the moment.  There were dark circles under her eyes and her trembling lips were pale.

The doctor continued.  “By sedating her, we have induced a comatose state that will allow time for the swelling to go down and for the brain to begin to heal.  Her vital signs are good and we’re monitoring her very closely, of course.  I do need to tell you that she incurred other injuries in addition to the head trauma.”

    3. I have just caught up with your story and it is heartbreaking. I know it is a word others have used, but there isn’t a better one to describe the feelings evoked by your story so far. Although there were those cute and tender pre-accident scenes, and it was lovely that Bette told Tina how she was feeling when they spoke on the phone. This is beautifully written – thank you!
