Lifeline – Chapter 10
Lifeline
Chapter 10
Sometimes they told each other stories in the dark of night long after they had read or made love, when something kept one or both of them from settling down to sleep. They were always their stories, intimate recollections that were deeply personal to them. A few in particular had become favorites and they usually took turns in the telling of them, for the interpretations were their own and each enjoyed hearing the other’s version.
Bette had been thinking a lot about the stories, trying to decide which ones to tell Tina while she waited for her to awaken. She would include the storytelling with the items on the list.
The anniversary dinner was still in her thoughts since they had celebrated it so recently, and she determined that it would be the first story she told Tina, hoping it was fresh in her mind too. She would begin with the near past and travel backward with the stories as far as she had to go until the memories inevitably pulled her love back to her. They had already shared the anniversary story just a few nights earlier, and Tina had done the telling. This time she would combine Tina’s version with her own, hoping against hope that she would be heard.
Her mind made up, she set off in search of Grace Pell to ask when she could visit Tina again while the girls prepared the family waiting room for lunch. There was only one other couple there, which left them plenty of space to eat, so the family had spread out, chatting in low voices that she found comforting though she didn’t listen to the words, merely the thrum of the conversation.
The thoughts occupying her mind allowed no room for outsiders in there. The stories, memories and The Voice that spoke at will were all that resonated at present unless she concentrated very hard to still them in order to converse with the hospital personnel. During those brief exchanges the dissonance quieted for the most part and she seemed to hear normally again.
It was so odd the way she now felt alienated from those around her, as though they were separated by a thick wall of glass rendering everything muffled and strange in her presence. She accepted it the way people accept the strangeness in dreams. It was simply the way it was.

You know what makes me happy, Nell? Reading your posts, this lovely story over and over again. =) Thank you for breaking your silence. And thank you for breathing new life into this fictional couple that I’m still so fond of. You have no idea how many people wish on shooting stars to stumble upon or be blessed with the deep, abiding and lava-hot love that your version of TiBette share. *Sigh* I’m looking forward to more trips down memory lane and how Bette will use the items on The List to help bring Tina out of her stupor. Brava, Nell! Cheers! =)
I have been checking frequently for a new post to this touching story. You write this couple and their journey so beautifully. I look forward to more memories of the past and memories yet to be created. Thank you.
More people should be so lucky to have a love like theirs.
Thanks to you and this wonderful story, I’ve learned a new word today. “Insouciance” PPVS
Wonderful as always. Love the way you are writing this story. It is a testament to the love they share. We should all be so blessed. Thanks for posting.
Really lovely, as usual. Surely this will generate a few lively spikes in Tina’s EKG, won’t it?
I just love this amazing story. Thank you for posting.
wonderful writing that conjures up beautiful images of my favourite couple
What they all said. Thank you.
Perfection. The dialogue is amazing and the scenes you paint just come to life in my mind. Thank you, I love this Better and Tina and although my poor little Tina is hurt I love the pillar of strength Bette is trying to be for her.

Excellent and just so briliantly beautiful. Thank you.
Thanks everyone for your thoughts on the chapter. I decided I’m not waiting until the next post to speak to you when I can do it right here! Curiosity, I’m laughing at your insouciance! Dainty,mm and TK, your words are always thoughtful, insightful, and so encouraging to me. TK, I’m thinking about you. Gumby, I’m so pleased that you like my version of our favorite couple(You know how I feel about your work). M, you’re just not that silent anymore and I for one am happy about that (LOL). Keep poking me, please.didi,az,fav,Amanda, nue,Quer,JDM: Y’all have been with me from the start of this story I think, and always take time to speak up, which is so, SO nice.Ballent and rd, you two are newer but appreciated just as much as the rest of my readers and I hope you will continue to comment! You are all keeping this story going, because without your support and encouragement I’d probably be too lazy to post. Hugs,~Nell
Don’t know how I’ve missed this incredible story, but have just savored all 10 chapters. Love the way you’ve written their relationship and the dialogue is just delicious. As a side note from a southerner, “ya’ll” is frequently used for one person and “all ya’ll” for a group. Thanks for sharing your talent, Nell.
Thank you for update.Wonderful story.
Amazing as usual!
Thank you, Nell! As mightymouse said, finding a post from you is a gift that makes me happy! The love and connection between your Tina and Bette is just beautiful. You always write with such depth and truth. I was especially moved by the way Bette was comforted by her friends whilst feeling separated from them and her determination to be strong when talking to Tina, and by Tina’s meditations on all the ways she was ‘more’ because of her love. Thanks again.
That was awesome!
