    Meet Dr. Sydney Livingston•refined & rebellious activist dealing with abortion rights, same-sex partner rights, euthanasia, health care, hate crimes and gun control.     ALICE and KIT enter the waiting room joining JENNY and MAX.
    

     
    

    KIT
    

    What happened?  How’s Shane?
    

     
    

    JENNY
    

    We don’t know anything yet.
    

     
    

    KIT
    

    Fuck
    

     
    

    Doctor SYDNEY Livingston enters the waiting room.  Sydney is an attractive woman—a mixture of exotic and athletic—of Indian descent in her late forties/early fifties.  She exudes professionalism, confidence, calmness and control.
    

     
    

    SYDNEY
    

    Anyone here with Shane McCutcheon?
    

     
    

    EVERYONE
    

    Yes.
    

     
    

    ALICE
    

    We all are.
    

     
    

    SYDNEY
    

    Time is the enemy, so I’ll be brief.  Shane is suffering from an apparent overdose.  I need to know what she was taking—prescription and recreational drugs.
    

     
    

    MAX
    

    No prescription drugs…
    

     
    

    JENNY
    

    (interrupting, defiantly) 
    

    No recreational drugs either… that would be illegal, right?
    

     
    

    SYDNEY
    

    (impatiently)
    

    I’m dealing with practicalities, not legalities.  
    

     
    

    Jenny, Max, Alice and Kit exchange looks but are silent.
    

     
    

     
    

    SYDNEY (CONT’D)
    

    (impatient and disgusted)
    

    You can tell me now when I can help her—or toxicology will tell me in the postmortem.  
    

     
    

    Sydney notices Max looking at Jenny pleadingly—but Jenny does not respond.  
    

     
    

    SYDNEY (CONT’D)
    

    Call me if you remember anything.
    

     
    

    Sydney leaves the room.
    

     
    

    MAX
    

    Jenny we have to tell her.
    

     
    

    JENNY
    

    Shane already has a record—they’ll prosecute her.
    

     
    

    ALICE
    

    Better Shane be in trouble than dead.  I’m going to talk to the Doctor.
    

     
    

    Alice leaves to catch the Doctor.  
    

     
    

    JENNY (O.S.)
    

    Alice, don’t.
    

     
    

    KIT (O.S)
    

    Let her go…She’s right.  I’ve been there.
    

     
    

     Kit, Jenny and Max watch Alice speaking to the doctor through the waiting room window.
    

     
    

    INT.  HOSPTIAL CORRIDOR
    

     
    

    Alice speaks with Sydney briefly, Sidney touches Alice’s arm reassuringly, nods in appreciation and heads quickly toward the exam curtain. 
    

     
    

    INT. HOSPITAL WAITING ROOM – AN HOUR LATER
    

     
    

    TINA rushes into the waiting room.
    

     
    

    TINA
    

    I’m sorry, I came as fast I I could
    

     
    

    KIT
    

    Where’s Bette?
    

     
    

    TINA
    

    She took Angelica to the movies.  Her cell is off but I’ve left messages.
    

     
    

    Sydney enters and looks pointedly at Alice.
    

     
    

    SYDNEY
    

    Shane’s vitals are stable.  She should be fine.
    

     
    

    KIT
    

    Thank God.
    

     
    

    Nurse KAREN Garcia enters the room.

    1. It took me a while to get through the entire story, but it was well worth it. I actually read it last night, but needed to think about all that went on in the story before commenting. Usually I don’t read Shane stories-not because I don’t love the character but because it always goes pretty much the same way. Shane always messing up her relationships and not being able to curb her libido. While this story touched on that, it allowed for this character to grow and show some depth. I also loved that the doctor was a mature woman who knew what she wanted, accepted what life gave her and was able to lead a productive life in spite of some tragedies in her life. I don’t know if you will get many people reading to the end, but if they don’t, its their loss. Thanks.

    2. This is lengthy & the dialogue fluctuates between (mostly) thought provoking and (occasionally) contrived. You wonder where “Syd” is taking you—but BE PATIENT as the journey weaves into a heart warming and heart wrenching conclusion. Well worth the investment of time—5 ++

    3. I read each word,I will say that the wonderful Dr was very well verse in human behavior. She seem to know and understand the heart of everyone. Yet was ready to imbrace life and live it to the fullest. thanks

    4. Just completed reading this story and the sun has come up in the last few minutes. This story was wonderful and it took about 5 hrs to read it and it was worth every minute spent reading it. Wish everyone could read this it was quite educational to understand that the doctor understood man’s foibles yet continued to seek the best out of life for herself and friends and was not afraid to take the chance. Remarkable woman, hope we see her again in the future.

    5. Ilene Chaiken, this is worth a look—The L Word comes of age. This really moved me, made me cry, made me think, and made me want to know more about this mysterious, militant, yet mild-mannered medicine woman. Where has she been & where is she going…and what L Word character will she end up with?????Thanks for the encouraging reviews. I stuck with this and ended up savoring it during a soggy afternoon—it kept me scrolling with its own sadness and sunshine.
