    Bettes arrival

    The cab dropped Bette at the front door, she struggled up the drive carrying her bags and the huge stuffed giraffe that her mother had bought for Rosie and insisted she take with her. She felt tired, rumpled and dirty from the flight.

    The porch light was on but the rest of the house seemed to be in darkness. She got out her keys, opened the door and pulled her bag into the house with her. She threw the giraffe on top of the bag and turned to close the door.

    Hey babe said a tired voice.

    She turned around and saw Tina sitting up on the sofa. Papers were scattered on the floor as if theyd slipped off her knee. Hey she said smiling and came over to kiss her you didnt have to wait up

    I..I must have fallen asleep ..what time is it?

    Late

    I see you had company Tina pointed at the giraffe he looks like the strong silent type.

    Bette rolled her eyes Which is more than I can say for the guy sitting next to me on the flight home..Oh my godhe spent almost the whole flight hitting on me..I told him I was married ..but he didnt take the hint..

    Poor baby said Tina.

    YeahId have shown him the picture of my family but he was one of those guys who would have seen it as a personal challenge

    Tina quirked her eyebrow at Bette.

    Yeah I know I should have anyway..Id have liked to have seen his face.

    Tina picked up her papers. Are you ready for bed?

    Uh huh..I need a shower first..

    Did you eat? Theres some leftovers if youre hungry..

    Im not hungry..just tired.. Bette held out her had and pulled Tina up off the sofa, hugged her How was your flight?

    Good..Rosie slept most of the way..I even managed to do some work..

    Thats good.. Bette smiled lovingly at Tina, ran her hand along Tinas shoulder and under her hair, cupped her neck, pulled her closer and kissed her I missed you.

    Tina stroked Bettes arm and looked up at her How was the meeting?

    Bette shrugged OK..Ill tell you about it laterI need that shower first..

    Bette collected her bag, threw the giraffe on the sofa where Tina had been lying and followed Tina into the bedroom. She paused long enough to grab some clean PJs and then she headed straight for the shower. She stood under the steaming water thinking about the meeting in New York and the visit with her mother. Neither had been exactly what she had dreamed of.

    Bette turned off the shower, toweled herself dry and pulled on the PJs. It felt good to be home. She walked through to the bedroom trying to decide what she should tell Tina about the meeting.

    Tina was curled up on her side of the bed fast asleep. Bette moved quietly around the room, she kissed Rosie good night then climbed into bed. She leaned across Tina and turned out her light and lay there looking at her. She looked so young and innocent when she was asleep, like the first time shed seen her. Bettes heart beat faster and her breath quickened as she watched her. She put out a hand and moved a strand of Tinas hair off her face. Tina stirred and Bette lifted her hand quickly not wanting to wake her knowing that Rosie would do that soon enough.

    -(Why do I love you so much, Bette thinks, is it your beautiful smile? Is it the calmness I feel when Im with you or the way I just know youll always be there for me? )

    Bette drifts off to sleep thinking about the first time she saw Tina..

    11. Oz, a while back I joked about their next baby being named Basil, ala ‘Rosemary’. I was attempting a joke, not a Brenda Starr spinoff.
      However, as I have researched basil, I find its properties might be just what the doctor ordered chez Porter-Kennard to keep their love on track.
      Basil’s properties: the scent causes sympathy between people; used to mend quarrels between lovers; Sprinkle it over your lover’s body to insure fidelity (Bette); -bestows the energy of love and devotion, strengthens faith, compassion, and clarity. I know Rosie is still an infant, but…

    14. I understand that Bette is trying to achieve a balance between the demands of her hard-charging professional life and the nurturing nature of her personal life. It’s something we must all grapple with. Thanks for approaching this subject with compassion for the changes that Bette must make. Love this fic!

    15. Bette’s life has a quality of serenity when she is with Tina and Rosie. She has to don a cloak of invincibility with her friends, relatives and career. I hope she understands and appreciates the island of peace she shares with her wife and child.

    16. Hope the job offer was ugh, and Bette will stay in LA..Parents want let their children grow up. If it between Tina and a job Bette will be in LA for a long time.
