    One step at a time…14

Tina poured herself a cup of coffee and added enough cream to turn it a caramel color. She brought the steaming mug back to bed and checked the clock on the nightstand. 5:30 in California meant 8:30 in New York. By now Rick would have reviewed his email and messages, read both the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, and finished his second huge vat of caffeine. It was the perfect time to call him.

“Richard Kennards office,” answered a cool, imperious voice. It was Maxine.

Tina cleared her throat. “Is Rick available?”

“May I tell him whos calling?”

    “Its his sister.”

    “Hold please.”

Tina listened to the painfully bad muzak, trying not to feel nervous. Suddenly the conversation she’d been having in her head for the past few days was about to happen. And the thought of finally saying everything out loud was more than a little intimidating.

“Hey Slacker! Its 5:30″arent you supposed to be jogging through the smog-choked streets of Los Angeles?”

Tina smiled and sipped her coffee. “Im taking the morning off so I can talk to my favorite brother.”

    “Im your only brother.”

“You sound about as happy to hear from me as your secretary does. I always feel like Maxine is disappointed that its only a blood relative calling.”

“She is disappointed. You arent billable,” Rick said, and Tina could hear the grin in his voice from 3,000 miles away.

“Spoken like a true yuppie lawyer,” Tina teased.

“Hey, thats aspiring judge thank you very much. And if you arent nice to me Im going to make you call me Your Honor. So whats going on? How are you? Hows show business?”

“Work is good. Busy. Im okay. Better than okay, actually. IumI met someone,” Tina said, fidgeting with her coffee cup.

“Do I need to be sitting down for this conversation?”

    “I thinkIm falling in love.”

“*****. I do need to be sitting down.”

    “Theres more.”

“Of course there is. Should I guess? Is he a felon? Does he have five children and a crazy ex-wife and a custody battle from *****?”

“Hes a she,” Tina said, more quietly than she intended. A long pause followed, and Tina could almost hear her brothers mind working.

“Youre not kidding are you?” He asked at last.

“Shesshes completely unlike anyone Ive ever known. ShesBette is”

“Wait a minute. Are you telling me that youre a *****?”

“Im telling you that Im falling in love.”

    “With a woman.”

    “With Bette.”

    “Who is a woman.”

“I need you to be on my side,” Tina said impatiently.

“I am on your side. Im just trying to figure out what side you’re on.”

“Okay,” Tina said, hugging her knees to her chest. “I met an extraordinary person who is brilliant and successful and funny and passionate. And she happens to be a woman. Which, technically I guess, means that Im a *****.”

    “You guess?”

“I dont exactly have a lot of experience to draw from. Its not like I got some kind of a Welcome kit in the mail. All I know is how I feel.”

    “Wow.”

    “Yeah. Wow.”

“This might take me a few therapy sessions to figure out.”

    “You and me both.”

“And I should probably rent Personal Best and really watch it this time.”

“Will you be serious for a minute!”

“Im trying. But thats quite a bombshell to drop on a Tuesday morning.”

“I didn’t plan this. It justhappened. We met and talked andI cant explain it. Imdrawn to her. Its as if I was meant to be with her.”

“Andyoure okay with this? Thislesbian thing?”

“So far. Its only been a month. But yes. Im fine with it.”

“Does sheBettedoes she make you happy?”

“Ive never been this happy,” Tina said quietly.

    “Have you told Mom yet?”

    “No. Youre the first.”

“Dad is just going to Well. You know how Dad is.”

Tinas eyes filled with tears, and she swallowed hard and sniffled, unable to speak.

“Hey,” Rick said gently. “Come on. Itll be alright, Tina.”

“I dont know. Mom will be okay, I think. Eventually. But”

“Look. One thing at a time. Tell them first, deal with the fallout afterwards.”

    “IumIm afraid,” Tina said.

“When are you going to talk to them?”

“Soon. Id like to give them time to get used to the idea and then maybe bring her home to meet them.”

“Jesus, this is serious, isnt it? The last guy you brought home was your prom date.”

Tina smiled and dried her eyes. Her older brother was definitely not perfect”he could be egotistical, elitist, and stubborn. But he had always been her biggest fan and her most loyal advocate.

    “Jerry Fisher.”

“That guy was an idiot,” Rick replied.

“You thought every guy I dated was an idiot.”

“Hopefully you have better taste in women than you ever did in men. What does Bette do? Tell me youre not dating another lawyer.”

“She owns an art gallery. Shes 31, Yale grad, tall, dark, and gorgeous.”

“Scraping the bottom of the barrel, huh?”

    Tina laughed. “Something like that.”

“It sounds like tall, dark, and gorgeous might be around for a while.”

“I hope so. I reallyI hope so.”

“If she makes you happy, then Im sure shes incredible. I cant wait to meet her.”

“That would be great,” Tina said, exhaling slowly.

“Let me know what happens, okay? With Mom and Dad. I mean, Id be glad to talk to them if you think it would help.”

    “Thanks, Rick. Thank you.”

“Justno matter what, remember that I love you, okay? You big *****.”

    “Yeah. I remember.”

    1. “It’s not like I got a Welcome kit in the mail” what genius line….and you big dyke….hilarius!!! I am glad that her brother although suprised did not totally reject her. Sweet chapter, thanks wonderfully written.

    2. Very nice FFC. I could feel the love and affection between these two. I’m glad Tina has someone in her corner. Loved the Yeah, you aren’t billable line. That was just great! Snappy and sharp dialog conveying emotion and complex feelings at the same time.

    3. Most brother or sister. Take the other at face value. If they are happy to some that all that matters. Parents are so different. All they can think of is grandchildre and what will my friends think. Thanks

    4. Sterling dialogue. Very fun to read. This is the kind of support we all hope for when we have to tell someone a big piece of news – glad Tina has a supportive big brother.

    5. That was a very realistic story I can actually picture that conversation between a brother and a sister…Please continue I am really enjoying this story and your point of view… Thanks for taking the time for us..

    6. i love the story. too bad we all can’t have a brother like that. mine probably thinks he will burst into flames if he has to mention his sister is lesbian.

    7. Will you put your incredible super powers to use please, and start saving kittens in trees or something? This constant turning out of amazing chapters is getting so trite. I’m tired of knowing that everytime I read one of your chapters, the dialogue will have me smiling, holding my breath, taking notes, getting weepy and using it in my everyday life. And I’m waaaaaay beyond tired of falling more and more in love with your Bette and Tina in every chapter of every story you write.

      So, please. Save a kitten.

(5 stars cause you ROCK MY ANKLE SOCKS!!! :D)

    8. Love the ‘welcome kit’ comeback, and the shoutout to Personal Best. FFC, I can’t decide which you’re better at – razor-sharp dialogue or the seamless narrative that surrounds it. 5 gajillion stars!

    9. This is so significant in Tina’s life. When you start coming out to your family…you know it’s life altering. Glad her brother was so sweet and understanding. Well done as always.
