Bette took the envelope out of her desk drawer, sliding the earring into her open palm. She turned the cool metal object over and over in her hand, thinking about last night and Tina Kennard. Had she left this on purpose, knowing that Bette would recognize it? Was this some kind of signal? A game? No, Bette decided, setting the shiny piece of jewelry on her desk. This woman was not a player. And, as Alice had reminded her incessantly, Tina was straight.

But there was definitely some kind of energy between them. Bette was certain of that. Shed known it from the moment they shook hands at the reception a week ago. And she felt it again last night. Their eyes had met over and over throughout the evening, brief glances in the middle of other conversations. At the very least, they had an acute awareness of each other. As soon as she’d been able to extricate herself from her hostess duties, Bette had joined Tina in front of what was easily her own favorite piece in the entire gallery. They were inches apart, their arms just barely touching.

“Imagining this on one of your walls?” Bette asked.

“No,” Tina said, not turning from the stark, dramatic painting. “I dont need to own it. Im just glad it exists.”

They were interrupted before Bette had a chance to respond, and Tina wandered off to another work in another room. Dinner was being served before Bette had a chance to talk with her again.

“Are you coming to sit down?” Bette asked.

“Yes. I just really like this one,” Tina said.

Tina didnt even flinch when Bette moved closer, impossibly closer, and reached forward.

“Youve lost your earring in your hair,” Bette said, her slender fingers barely brushing Tinas cheek as she gently untangled the jewelry from the other woman’s tawny tresses.

“Thank you,” Tina said softly, not breaking eye contact as she slipped the earring back in place.

Bette picked up the earring from her desk. Holding it, weighing it. Remembering the caress of Tinas hair against her skin. Whatever she was sensing from this woman was worth exploring further. Maybe they would be friends. Maybe something more.

“Kelly,” Bette said, pressing the intercom button on her phone.

“Yes Bette,” her administrative assistant replied.

“Could you get a phone number for me?”

    1. I loved Tina’s reply, “I don’t need to own it. I’m just glad it exists.” That’s true for so many things. Loving the story, FFC. Now go eat some T-giving dinner to have the strength to write some more!

    2. I will personally cook you a turkey and bake you a pie, if it will get you to continue this wonderful story. Again, your subtlety somehow translates to exquisite details in my mind. I have no idea how you do that. My repeated pleas to borrow that wonderful talent of yours go unanswered, LOL. I guess I’ll just be satisfied with being glad you exist. LOL Keep it up FFC.

    3. You are right on with Bette feeling the energy between them. That is usually the way it is when you meet someone for the first time – you can feel it – the chemistry is just right – you sense that you have a connection with this person and you want to grab it, hold it and explore it further. You have captured this beautifully in you story. You may not know where you are going with this but I say right to the top!

So excellent! 5 million bright stars to you! Please post again soon and thanks so much for sharing your time and talent.
