    Only Women Bleed

“Oh God, what’s happened,” thought Tina as she stared at her iBerry screen that read: One missed call-Bette.

Tina’s mind raced to the few times that Bette phoned her over the past 10 years—Angelica’s broken arm in April 2012;  the mild concussion that seemed much more serious at the time; and the meningitis scare last year when Angelica was 11.  As she furiously punched in Bette’s code, a text message popped up on her screen:  “Mom, come to schl now!”

“R you ok?” Tina sent back immediately to her daughter.

    “PLS get me!”

“On my way,” Tina signed off and quickly shoved some papers in her bag, yelled out to Kelly that she’d be gone for the rest of the day, and ran to the parking lot.  As she flung open the door of her car her iBerry buzzed again.  Bette was calling.

“Bette, what’s wrong?” Tina shouted a bit louder than the level of noise warranted.

“Angelica called me crying, she said something about an accident,” Bette said, a barely concealed panic in her voice, “I’m on my way to the school right now.”

“So am I,” Tina said as she shifted into high gear.  “I’m probably 15 minutes away if this traffic doesn’t ease up.”

“I’ll be there in 10,” said Bette.  “I’m sure she’s okay Tina,” Bette reassured, “otherwise someone from Harvard-Westlake would have called.”  Bette’s panic eased as she realized the wisdom of what she had just said to calm Tina.

“You’re right,” Tina breathed in deeply, willing her pulse to slow.  “Thanks Bette, I’ll see you in a few minutes.”

Tina raced in the commuter lane on Beverly Glenn Boulevard until the exit to Angelica’s school appeared.  She pulled behind Bette’s Mercedes, which Tina noted was parked illegally and uncharacteristically not perfectly aligned with the curb.  Tina allowed herself an extremely quick peek in the mirror before jumping out of her car.  It had been months since she had seen Bette.  Parents Orientation at Harvard-Westlake in September, Tina remembered.  They sat together, but only spoke of logistics, curriculum, and sports options upon their daughter’s entrance to the very exclusive girl’s middle school.  That’s how it had evolved over the years.  The former lovers were amicable, but stilted in their interactions, uneasy about their conversations.  A wall of self-protection, built layer upon layer, surrounded each woman, Angelica providing the only bridge between two islands.

    1. So great to see you posting again and quite the crazy coincidence because I just finished re-reading your “My skin is …” story the other day. I thought there was more to that story and thought about pm’ing you but figured it had been so long since you posted that it was pointless. Guess I was wrong!! LOL. Anyway, I like the new premise, kids can say the darndest things, huh? And we’ve all been there when mother nature strikes for the first time. Please post again soon, I’m in desperate need for some fanfiction entertainment!!

    2. When I saw the title I thought it might be about THAT kind of bleeding. lol Now that I’m back to being 27 and not mentally 7, I must say this sounds interesting so far. The way Angelica said she didn’t want to choose between her mothers was sad. I guess she’s had to do a lot of choosing over the years.

    3. I’m a sucker for anything that quotes a song lyric, yup, even Alice Cooper. Look forward to more – is it already written or is this an ‘as we go along’ kind of story?

    4. Welcome back. I can remember that day and the feelings that went through me. I was not too far off of what Angelica is going through. I can not wait to read the next installment of this story.

    5. It was so good to see that you posted a story! Your’s was one of the first that I read on this site – got me hooked for sure. I’m looking forward to following this one. Thanks. Lin

    6. Great start…keep it up you’ve got me very interested! Poor thing…Ugh don’t we all remember that dreaded day when we got our first period? It reminds me of that book, “Are You There God, It’s Me Margret” that I read around that time. Anyway, wonderful start..keep it up!

    7. well dear me what thoughtless parents that they didn’t prepare her for the inevitable…geez my mom was telling me at age 7 about sex, periods etc. Just as well because I started periods at an early age…and yeah Angie’s right why should she have to choose between them/ and why didn’t the school inform them properly so one of them could bring some decent spare clothes…if I was Angie I’d be too mortified to go back to that ‘elite’ school…poor kid.

    8. First off I love Angelica, Bette and Tina stories
Second poor angelica she must be so embarrassed
but let me say this Angie dont feel bad because im 27 and I still have horrible cramps and hate every mintue of my cycle from the time I got it at 11 TMI I know but im just saying I feel your pain…And Bette and Tina separated for over 10 years nooooooooo
