“Baby?”
With good reason, the whispered words failed to stir an exhausted Tina. Throughout a tumultuous night the studio executive struggled with a dry cough; her breathing hindered by a congested chest. Darkness was eventually chased away by the early morning light that filtered through the drawn bedroom shades. Now, Bette could only commiserate as she tenderly touched her girlfriend’s arms and back.
Again the woman impeccably dressed for a mid-day meeting tried to quietly urge detection. “Tina?”
A quiet moan was all Tina could rally as a response.
“Tina,” Bette continued gently as if coaxing a nervous gazelle to settle amidst predators sharing a lush open plain, “there’s some tea for you.”
On nightstand sat a traditional style Yixing purple clay pot from the Chinese province of Jiangsu. Crafted with a rounded body and smooth delicate handle, the tea that was intended to soothe would remain fragrant and hot for when the resting woman was ready.
Bette had cleared the surface of the handcrafted bedside table to arrange the tea set, a bottle of water, medicine to supplement the prior dose as well as a box of tissues. In addition, a charging cell phone’s ringer was set to low and was within easy reach as she planned to remind her sick partner to take the tablets at around eleven.
“Honey,” the brunette’s voice was low and her words slow, “I’ll call you later so you can take these tablets all right?”
“Okay thanks…,” her voice was just as soft but also hoarse, “are you leaving?”
“I have to go in a little bit,” she informed reluctantly. “Are you going to be fine?”
“Mmhmm…I just…I’m tired.”
“I know T.”
The seated woman rubbed Tina’s arm and back in comfort. There wasn’t much she could do but sympathize and wait for the illness to run its course.
“I’ll call you later?” Posed in question, but really Bette meant it as a promise.
Tina may have been drained but there was still humor left, “I might go out for a run. So if I’m not here just leave a message.”
“I’ll be sure to do that.” Bette grinned before pressing her hand on her partner’s lower back. The fever’s heat was evident, even through the soft blanket that covered Tina’s prone body.

I love how you take everyday situations and elevate them to a higher plane that we all can relate to. Even if we haven’t had a significant other take care of us when we were ill, we probably had a parent do that very same thing when we were young. How safe and secure we felt just by their presence. It brings back wonderful memories.

So glad Bette stayed with her. I was wondering what the hell she was thinking when she was telling Tina that she had to go to work. Tina would have NEVER left her sick and alone, not for a minute. Thanks for posting.
What a wonderful way to take us out of this tumultuous year. When you write fan fiction there’s ‘us and you’…sounds perfect to me. Thank you…and have a safe and happy New Year, and every day after that.
