Chapter 5

Best Laid Plans

She spun around in the ridiculous black cape looking at herself in the mirror. She walked over to the life-size portrait of herself and her lover and ran her finger over Cindy’s hair.

“It’s almost time, baby. I will avenge your death. Porter will pay for what she did to you with her bratty kid and her incredibly hot little wife. I’m gonna have a little fun with that little blonde before I’m done though.” She looked at the picture and covered Cindy’s eyes. “Don’t worry baby, it won’t mean anything.”

The light filtered through the bedroom window and Bette opened her eyes to the sunrise. It had been two weeks since the incident with Denbo’s flunkies. Tina had faired remarkably well considering the terror she had experienced and the issues she had with loss. They both kept Angie close at all times and the little girl was getting used to sleeping in their bed but they couldn’t bear to leave her alone even for a moment.

Bette held Tina close and Angie was tucked protectively in the crook of Tina’s arm, holding Hamlet. It was a good thing the bed was big. They had slept this way since the incident and Bette had taken a leave of absence from both her jobs. She was a Master Slayer with only one charge…protecting her family from Denbo.

Angie woke next but was unable to move under Tina’s grip.

“Mama!”

Bette smiled at the tenacity of their little one. She was so much like her birth mother, with the same brightness in her eyes.

“T, baby, wake up.”

Tina was startled as she felt Angie pulling away from her, thinking the worst.

“Angie!”

“Hey, it’s ok T. Wake up sweetheart, everything is ok.”

She opened her arms and Angie scooted away looking for her toys, which she found by the window seat. She set to playing while her parents watched.

“Sorry, I thought…”

“It’s ok T. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night just to make sure you’re both still here.”

“I just wish they could find her. I mean how fucking hard could it be?”

“I know it’s frustrating but they’ll find her soon, you’ll see.” Bette didn’t know if she believed that herself.
