(A month later. Star City. Evening Star. Bette was at her desk writing up her latest story. The city beat had been slow lately. Jennifer Schecter was sitting opposite her; she was the star reporter in the international section. The two had soon become friends)

Jenny: Hey Porter how’s the city beat?

Bette: Slow as usual

Jenny: Still? God you must going mad

Bette: Feels like it

Jenny: Why don’t you come out with me and Niki tonight?

Bette: No can do Kit and I are meeting up with Angus and Adele

Jenny: Adele Channing? The movie director?

Bette: Yep she wants to use the club in her movie

Jenny: Wow!

Bette: Kit wants me there to look over the paperwork

Jenny: That’ll bring good money to the club

Bette: Hopefully it’s been a bit slow of late just like the city

Jenny: And you

(Bette looks up from her article)

Bette: What’s that supposed to mean?

Jenny: You never date

(Bette looks back at her computer)

Bette: For a reason

Jenny: Like what?

Bette: I can’t talk about it

Jenny: Can’t or won’t

Bette: Can’t

Jenny: They did die or something?

(Bette pushes back the tears that had started to gather and begins typing. Jenny realises that was the answer)

Jenny: Bette I’m sorry I…

Bette: Don’t Jen you couldn’t have known

Jenny: How?

Bette: They were murdered

Jenny: I’m sorry did they ever catch who did it?

Bette: No

(Jenny knew to end the conversation there and then; it was obvious Bette was still grieving. Marina runs out of her office. Marina Ferrer was the editor and chief of the Evening Star)

Marina: Bette get down to the Peabody Nuclear Plant now, they’ve had a reactor leak

(Bette stands from her desk and gathers her things)

Marina: Be careful

(Bette runs out of the door and exits the Evening Star)

Jenny: I wish it wasn’t a nuclear reactor

Marina: Me too

(Cut to Wayne Industries. The laboratory. Tina is connected to breathing equipment and monitoring equipment. Her eyes are rolling in her head. The alarms from the nuclear power plant can be heard. Tina’s eyes snap open)

(Cut to the lunch hall. Kate was having some lunch when the alarm goes off)
