    Trial and Resolution

    They walked in silence from the courtroom to the meeting room, once inside Tina closed the door and turned to Bette who was looking distractedly out of the window. “Miss Porter we need to go over a few things. I would have done this earlier but I have been unable to reach you for the last couple of days”. “Well I’m here now” she replied “Let’s get on with this”. Tina went through how she believed the case would progress and reminded Bette that the most important thing was that she remained calm throughout. The clerk knocked on the door and told the two women they had to be back in the court room in five minutes. Tina gathered up her paperwork and they both walked back quickly.

    Aidan’s attorney announced his next witness and Tina looked up quickly. “WHY???” was all Bette wrote on the piece of paper she passed to Tina. She shrugged, she had no idea why he had called the escort that Aidan had hired as his companion for the showing. As the escort took the stand she glanced apologetically towards Bette and mouthed the word ‘Sorry’ at her. It soon became apparent why she had been called, she did not deny being an escort but she denied being hired for the evening claiming that she was actually Aidan’s girlfriend.

    Bette was incensed, she snapped her pencil in half and was about to get to her feet when Tina grabbed her arm. Despite her anger Bette became acutely aware of the heat from Kennard’s hand through her jacket. She sat back down again but Kennard kept her hand on her arm and gently moved it slightly backwards and forwards in a calming motion.

    Tina declined to ask the escort any questions. Again Bette wrote “Why?” on her paper and passed it to Tina “Won’t get anything from her, will challenge Aidan” wrote back Tina. She was aware that things were not going exactly in accordance with her game plan but there was nothing insurmountable so far. However when Aidan’s attorney unexpectedly called Bette to the stand Tina became worried. She had been unable to gauge Bette’s demeanour as her face had been unfathomable. She had to admit Bette had one of the best poker faces she had come across. “You can do this” she said “Just keep calm, remember if your temper rises look at me, please look at me”.
