The Absence of One chapter 24
“Bette,” Tina all but ran after the brunette. Her mind was reeling from the sudden turn of events. “Stop running, Bette.”
They were right in front of the building when Tina had caught up with Bette. She held a wrist, gently tugging Bette to her. The tears were threatening to escape, but she held on. For too long she had relied on Bette to be the strong one.
“I’m sorry if I’m sending you mixed signals, Tina. I don’t want to hurt you.”
“Don’t run away from me,” Tina pleaded with the woman to no avail. Bette had slipped out of her grasp and hurried away without a backward glance.
She stood in the lobby, muted as people loomed around her. Her forehead wrinkled in confusion, shock had taken over. Reality came crashing down on her when a passer-by had brushed against her.
Snapping back to reality, Tina quickly made her exit. Her legs carried her to her car, stopping briefly to allow her a backward glance at the building. She allowed the tears to flow as she drove away, feeling her earlier hope fading fast.
Meanwhile back in Bette’s office, the woman had barked off orders to James not to disturb her before storming into her office. She unbuttoned her jacket and lied down on the sofa, covering her eyes with a hand.
“What a fucking mess,” she thought out loud.
It wasn’t until James’ phone began to ring did she gather herself. Reluctantly, Bette got up from the sofa and channeled her restlessness into work. The monotony calmed her, affording her with hours of controlled energy. By the time she left the office, her headache came back to the forefront in full force.
“James, I’ll see you Monday. Have a good weekend,” Bette said to him as she locked her office. “If you need anything, I have my cell phone with me.”
He nodded, handing her directions to Barbara’s place as they left the office together. “Here are the directions to the senator’s place. See you Monday.”
They parted ways at the parking lot, and Bette waved him goodbye as she drove off. Her destination was unclear. It was only when the rows of houses registered did she realize she had driven home on autopilot.

argh. this is good. but the senator must go.
Hot damn. I have a thing for Bette with The Senator. I was disappointed that never came to fruition but if TiBette get back together on TLW then I’ll be a happy camper.
Please say Yes Bette!!! I am so with susannah on this. PPVS
I always felt cheated that the Bette/Barbara attraction was never consummated on the show. If it happens here, I have no objections to say the least. After all, some action with the senator needn’t rule out a Tibette reunion if that’s where you ultimately choose to go. May the best woman win!
Ok, I’m totally caught up, and I am so frustrated that I didn’t get to click ‘Next Post’ again! Gr. Anyway, I’m really torn. I have to admit, I really like Bette and Barbara, and I did when they were on the show… and was frustrated when nothing happened. But… but… it’s TIBETTE! Hm, maybe Barbara and then TiBette. I like that idea. :D
Just want Tibette here!
I’m surprised that Barbara wants to hang around on the periphery, waiting for scraps, but maybe she’s just saying what she thinks Bette needs to hear. Bette’s going to have to start opening up to Tina as well… letting Tina back in doesn’t necessarily mean that she’ll get hurt. Thanks for the update, sky.
The senator is hot, but Tibette is way hotter. Bette needs to make up her mind and gives herself and Tina a chance to find happiness again. PPS
hey sky!!! Good story and glad it is not shaping up to be a tibette fic. Tina has hurt Bette enough…she needs to be with someone who cares for her and TINA IS NOT IT!!! If people don’t like a Bette and Barbara fic, don’t need to read it!! Post very very very very very sooooooooooooooooooooon sky d!!!
Good=bye Barbara
no tibette here..NO.TIBETTE. HERE.
I LOVE this story sky… Fabulous. x
