The Absence of One chapter 28

When no comment was forthcoming from Bette, Barbara continued. “I don’t foresee their attention waning just yet so we’ll need to be extra careful with Angelica.”

“Is your preoccupation with my daughter being in the limelight a product of your concern or your spin doctors’?” As soon as the words flew out of her mouth, Bette had cringed at her delivery. “I’m sorry, that was insensitive of me.”

“Yes, it was,” the senator said flatly. “I know you’re capable of taking care of your family, but this is a whole new level of scrutiny we’re talking about. The big-time political pundits will have their snipers trained on you.”

“You make it sound like we’re going to war,” Bette rubbed her forehead.

Barbara took a calming breath before she continued. “Even though I’m out of the Hill, I am still closely tied to it. Some would do whatever it takes to keep me away.”

“Do you want to go back?”

She shook her head no. “I’m done with the Hill. There are more opportunities out there that will give me the freedom to do more, to reach out to more people.”

Deciding they needed a break from the heart-to-heart talks, Bette offered the other woman a smile. “I don’t know about you but I’m maxed out on these deep conversations and I’m dying to see your new place. Shall we go now or do you want me to come over later?”

Her smile not quite reaching her eyes, Barbara nodded in agreement. “Why don’t you go change? We’ll leave after that.”

“Great. Feel free to make yourself at home.” Bette added as an afterthought, “I won’t be long.”

As soon as Bette had disappeared around the corner, Barbara breathed a sigh of relief. There was much to discuss, but at least they were on the journey together.

Meanwhile in the bedroom, Bette had shed her lounge clothes to change into something more appropriate. She envisioned how the night would go for them; the anticipation taking a slow climb as she shakily buttoned her shirt.

She stood in front of the full-length mirror, admiring her selection for the night. The outfit reminded her of a special night, a distant memory of when things were good with Tina.

    1. I don’t equate laying your cards on the table with pushiness, so the Senator’s making all the right moves as far as I’m concerned; and she did restrain herself from kissing Bette “senseless,” which couldn’t have been easy. I love this pairing too and want to see it evolve, but Bette’s skittishness and in-the-background Tina are ominous signs. Whatever. This story is still one of my favs and I can’t wait until the next installemnt.

    2. Whoa, Barbara’s got their whole lives mapped out already. One step at a time, Senator. Give Bette a chance to catch her breath, geez. Good chapter, sky, nice to see you that you’ve picked this back up. Post soon

    3. Ha Ha, jp22 you are funny!! The Senator just letting Bette know what she wants. No, if or buts about it! I think Bette’s going to need some time though considering Tina keeps popping in her head every three seconds.

    4. That was very good!!! I do think that Barbara letting Bette know what she want’s is a very good thing. No game’s being played. Thanks PPVS

    5. I’ve always loved this pairing. Always felt that BG was a perfect match for BP if that pesky Tina wasn’t in the way. I am so happy to see you’ve returned w/an excellent chapter that is well written and interesting. I like Barbara’s frankness. When you are of a certain age and you see what you like you just have to go for it. Thanks for writing a longer chapter. It’s more satisfying. PPS.

    6. God! take a chill pill senator let Bette breathe. I still think Bette is going to get burn because she still playing with Tina and the senator emotions. If she doesn’t want Tina then tell her already.
