The Girl Who Changed My Life 33: You can’t forget her

Tina was moping around Shane’s apartment. It was the day before her wedding, but everything was out of her hands now. Everything was ready, she just had to turn up tomorrow. This meant she had plenty of time to miss Bette.

“Please can I just call her?” Tina begged Shane.

“No way, we’re keeping you apart til tomorrow” Shane had conviscated Tina’s cell phone.

    “Sha-ane” Tina whined.

“You can whinge all you like, you’re not calling her”

Tina sat down on the sofa and folded her arms. Shane laughed and walked into the kitchen. Seeing an opportunity, she made a run for the cordless house phone. Shane yelled and chased her, but Tina made it to the bathroom and locked the door.

“Tina, you open this door!” Shane yelled, banging on the door.

“I’ll be a few minutes” Tina called.

Shane swore and went off to call Alice on her cell. Tina dialled her home number and waited for an answer.

    “Bette?”

    “T!”

    “Yeah, it’s me”

“How did you manage to get the phone?” Bette asked.

    “I’m locked in the bathroom”

Bette laughed “wow, you really wanted to speak to me. You sure you’re prepared for the wrath of Shane?”

“I just wanted to hear your voice” Tina admitted.

“I’m really glad you called baby”

    “I miss you”

“I miss you too. The house is so weird without you here” Bette looked around the empty house.

    “I’ll be there tomorrow”

“I can’t wait” Bette’s voice was deadly serious.

“I can’t wait to marry you”

“It’s gonna be the best day of my life”

“I love you so much” Tina said softly.

    “I love you too baby”

“Bette Porter!” Alice came barging through the door.

“*****!” Bette ran for the bathroom.

Alice chased Bette and caught her before she could lock the door.

“I love you T!” Bette yelled as Alice snatched the phone off her.

“Sorry Tina, we’ll see you tomorrow” Alice said before hanging up the phone and turning to Bette “you broke the rules Porter”

    Bette rolled her eyes.

“Anyway, forget about that. I brought someone to see you” Alice walked back to the front door.

Bette stared at the figure walking through the door.

    “Hey baby girl”

“Kit? What the ***** are you doing here?” Bette asked angrily.

Bette glared at Kit as she closed the door and walked into the living room. Alice disappeared conveniently into the kitchen.

“I wanted to see you. It’s the night before your wedding, Bette”

“Where have you been? You can’t turn up like this! I don’t need this stress, I’m getting married tomorrow” Bette turned away.

“I know. I want to see my baby sis get married”

“What if I don’t want you there?” Bette snapped.

“Bette, I’m sorry I haven’t been here for you. Let me be here now” Kit pleaded with her.

“You think you can just walk back into my life as if nothing’s wrong?”

“No, but I want to make amends. Please, Bette”

“Why, Kit? Why did you leave?” Bette’s voice softened as she sat down on the sofa.

“May I?” Kit indicated the space next to Bette, and Bette nodded “I made a mess of my life Bette. I’m trying to turn it around”

“Keep going” Bette still wouldn’t look Kit in the eyes.

“I’ve left my old friends behind. I’m not blaming them for how I was, but they played a part. I don’t take drugs anymore, Bette. I’ve gone through rehab”

“Really?” Bette turned to face her sister.

“I’m changing, baby girl. Please let me be a part of your life again” Kit took Bette’s hand.

    “If you mess up again…”

    “I won’t” Kit declared.

“We need to talk more. Everything isn’t just okay again, you know. But I just don’t need anymore stress at the moment”

“Thank you, thank you” Kit pulled Bette to her for an awkward hug.

“I’d like it if you’d be there tomorrow, Kit” Bette said quietly.

“I wouldn’t miss it for the world” Kit smiled.

“Now let me get some rest before my big day”

Kit got up and Alice returned from the kitchen.

“We’ll see you tomorrow Bette” Alice grinned and led Kit out.

Bette sighed as the front door closed. She was alone again. It really hit her how much Tina was a part of her life when she wasn’t there. She could feel the butterflies building in her stomach. She never usually got nervous, but this was different. Tomorrow she was going to commit to the woman she loved.
