“I am not sure how much luck plays in what we have. I guess we are lucky that Kit and Lara had the sense to see what was going on – that we were falling for one another and they got you on board to get us together – that was luck because I really do not think that I would have had the nerve to tell  my Press Secretary that I thought she was the most perfect woman I had ever seen. But after that its taken hard work and both of us having to leave our egos at the door and admit weaknesses and admit frailty “

“Helena doesn’t want to try the impossible which is what it would be if she thought that Tina could be persuaded to be with anyone but you “

“I know that – this conversation would be very different if I thought anything other than that Peggy”

Peggy nods “Rightly so – but my worry is my daughter who could easily pull herself together or she could succumb to her own demons”

“I speak for both of us when tell you that anything we can do – we will”

Peggy smiles “I appreciate that – the most important thing is that she doesn’t find out how everyone feels about her as Tina’s chief of staff. I think that I can persuade her to take some time off then come aboard helping me to get the nomination – that’s how I would like to run it “

“That is fine by Tina and I. When she gets back to Washington it would be nice if she came to see her god-daughter”

“I am pretty sure that one of the things that she is most worried about is not being able to be with Ella”

“We don’t want that to happen “

Peggy closes her eyes “Do you find that running a family is harder than running the country ?”

“Yes – please keep Tina and I up to date – if there is anything we can do – please tell us.. Even if it is something as simple as staying out of the way or asking her if she wants to take her God-daughter to see Santa”

Peggy smiles at me “I think the most amazing thing about you Bette is not just that you are a brilliant President – but that you are also a truly good human being  – that’s rare in politics. I think its proof that good guys can reach the top. Thank you Bette – Helena is lucky to have both of you in her corner and she knows that “
