    The Letter ch. 26

    The Letter

    Chapter 26

The discussion with the girls was the hardest thing I think that I had ever been part of. Bette struggled to tell them that the grandparents that they didn’t know wanted to take them from the only parent that they knew and the only home that they had ever lived in. Both girls had honest reactions to hearing the news. The reactions were consistent in how Bette had described their personalities to me. Alyssa had begun crying. Her fears were palpable for all of us to feel and she wanted to be held and comforted. Emma, not surprisingly had no longer wanted to be part of the group…needing to take time to herself to digest the news. Kit comforted Alyssa and Bette sat there herself on the verge of tears. Shane got mad at the pain that her nieces were feeling and went outside also needing to be alone and digest everything that was occurring. Dana and Alice sat beside one another silently. I wasn’t sure what to do myself.

“Should one of us go check on Em?” Alice asked.

“I guess I probably should,” Bette replied looking like she was going to be ill at the thought.

I knew that I didn’t have a great relationship with the girls yet but I felt that I was emotionally not as invested as the rest of them were. Their pains were as deep as that of the girls. I walked over to Bette and took her hands, leading her into the kitchen. I didn’t want to step on any toes but felt that I needed to at least offer to talk to Emma. I pulled Bette into my arms and I spoke quietly to her. “Baby, maybe I should talk to her. Right now you can’t without crying and Jayne said you needed to exude strength for them to hold onto. I can approach things with her as a lawyer and alleviate some of her fears with how the law is going to play into this. She needs to know that she and Alyssa will probably have a Guardian ad Litem assigned to them to protect their rights and having to talk to a court ordered therapist and what that means. Maybe right now, she just needs to know about the procedural way things are going to occur since there are no answers to the whys.”

Good to see Tina interacting with Emma and taking the lead to talk with Em and then the girls feeling comfortable enough to get in the bed with them when they were afraid and needed the comfort after the news was still fresh for thhem. Tina is good foer the family and they are good for Tina. PPS

    20. Welcome back NAG! We did miss this story so much! Glad that Tina is integrating herself more into Bette’s family and that Emma and Ally are allowing her to help them. The legal procedure will be hard to follow as the Warrens’ real intentions have not been clear, thus far. Hope Joyce discovers what’s behind their claim and also that she finds a way to stop their absurd demand for the custody of the girls. PPS Lucero & Marsha (JC’s Salsa Aunties)
