    The letter on the subway

    Chapter 4
It had now been a month since Bette had found the letter on the subway. All attempts at finding the elusive author of the missive had been utterly fruitless.
She had not known how to begin in the first place and the only logical thing had been to ride the subway regularly, although it was no longer a necessity for her. She had hopelessly clung to the belief that  chance would make them stumble on each other’s path. She laughed inwardly at how far fetched her idea had been. It was worth a try though.
The subway had been an enlightening experience to say the least. She was quite convinced that in the last month she had seen it all.
The very pale, clammy looking girl with her face in her hands who ended up being sick all over the subway car. Bette recalled the sudden collective groan from the passengers as the unholy belch erupted followed by the unmistakable and unfortunately unforgettable sound of splatter.
The scary moments when some stereotypical crazy mumbler had boarded the train and sat purposely making stabbing gestures and repetitively mumbling " I’ll kill him, I’ll kill him…"
The friendlier spontaneous singing choruses which would resound at the most unexpected moment. Like the two construction workers who were sitting side by side, when one of them started singing softly "Under the Boardwalk", only to be joined in the song by his friend and the homeless guy with the deep baritone voice.
She remembered the drunks,  the bird guy, the kids who were discussing inventing a homework robot, the rotund old lady with a penchant for erotica literature, the rats, the cockroaches, the smells…….. meeting nearly all seven million people who use the subway system everyday ….. but no letter writer!
Commuters rode the subway day in day out, shoulder to shoulder in harmony, discord or indifference,  each one with a story to tell. Each passenger, a living drama filled with tragedies or comedies, letting love flower at first sight or end with the last.
Bette couldn’t help but think in wonderment about how the New York Subway stations had remained the silent sentinels of so many stories of compassion, love, violence and loss. And there  she was trying to start her own only to be swatted in the infancy of her endeavour.

    1. YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!, so happy they have finally met. I think Bette should have had the letter and the roses in her office and not at home. Hope your writer’s block is over. Please stay with us, this is a wonderful story. Let your characters lead you, and they will, beautifully and accurately, just where they need to go. If you try to take them in a certain direction, they will balk and you will be at a loss as to how to continue. Sometimes you will sit down to write one thing and something altogether different comes out, that is when they are leading you. Let it happen and the story will unfold itself. I learned the hard way. This is a wonderful story of a beginning and never-ending love and an undying, glorious friendship. Let it happen. Waiting for the next chapter. Thanks for posting.

    2. Wow, so it very much sounds like Bette is about to meet one Tina, but has yet to meet 2 more: Tina the artist, and Tina the author of the letter… Very interesting and promising! Great job, keep going! ;)

    3. Dainty wrote some really lovely words and I could not agree with her more. Please continue and allow our girls to show you the way. This is a wonderful little story and can’t wait to see where it takes all of us. :)

    4. Yeah! They finally meet! :-) …. Don’t worry, I believe the idea already there inside your brain, but it just scattered here and there :-) just need time to compose it according to your wish! No worries ;-) Looking forward to your next post :-)

    5. that was cruel to leave us hanging like that. i love this story i’m a hopeless romantic but i hope Tina write again or Bette replies that should make things interesting. As i know this story wont be as simple as they fall in love ppvs caramel

    6. Amazing eye for details – Can´t wait for Danas presentation of “her” paintings – then let Bette and Tina ease into a friendship. Beautiful story. Thank you.

    7. I’m looking forward to seeing how this will play out. Will Bette recognize Tina’s handwriting at some point? Will she become fascinated with Dana because of Tina’s artwork? There are so many directions this can go. I love it.

    8. Thanks for this update. Ooh, Bette’s and Tina’s path finally converged. I would love to see more of their interaction in the following update.
