The Thawing of the Ice – Chapter Six

    Chapter Six
True to her word, Bette submitted her formal acceptance of the deanship for the California University School of the Arts on the day following her decision to halt her bid for custody of Angelica. Ten minutes after she submitted her email to University Chancellor, Phyllis Kroll, the chancellor’s phone number was flashing on Bette’s cell phone.

"Chancellor Kroll, good morning," Bette answered, her voice pleasant. She found herself smiling as she sat at her kitchen table, the morning sunlight streaming in around her.

"Good Morning, Bette. And please, call me Phyllis."

"Alright then. Good morning Phyllis. Did you receive my email?"

Phyllis’ voice was light and cheerful. If Bette hadn’t known the woman and been acquainted with her background, accomplishments and razor sharp intelligence, the tone of her new boss’s voice may have led her to believe that Phyllis was an airhead. Knowing better than to believe her ears gave Bette a sense of relief that she would be walking into a working environment where her thoughts, ideas, and passion would be nurtured and not impeded.

The cheery voice continued, its chipper edge never dulling as their conversation continued on. Bette was eager to get back to work and she insisted on starting work on the coming Monday. Phyllis had lobbied a brief protest that Bette should take more time, but her protest fell on deaf ears.

"You are strong willed and determined, Bette. I like that about you. I will see you on Monday morning. I’m also going to put in a rush to get your office ready for you between now and then," said Phyllis.

"Thank you. In the event the office is not ready, I still would like to start on Monday. Will that be an issue?" asked Bette.

The chipper tone slipped away, replaced by a deeper, more professional timbre. "It will be ready on Monday. Trust me on that. I can’t wait to start working with you, Bette. See you soon."

Their conversation came to a close and Bette smiled to herself, sipping from a mug of black coffee. She felt good. Knowing that she was getting back to work had energized her. She wanted to go and hug Angie and tell the little girl the good news. Her smile faltered as she realized Angie wasn’t there. A wrenching pain of heartache slid through her and she closed her eyes and took a deep and trembling breath.

    1. Friends and family are there to help us as life moves forward…and it does, even if it is one teeny tiny step at a time. Pretty soon your momentum will help make it smoother, the steps bigger. Thanks MTS!

    2. This Bette seems to be confident and have a clearer purpose and direction for her life. I love that she has picked up her friendship w/Alice once again.

    3. I love your portrayal of Bette Porter and it’s great to see her not only moving on with her own life but also helping and supporting her family and friends to deal with the issues in their lives as well. Tina is missing out on so much of the good that is Bette Porter. I’m with Dainty on the Jodi thing – PLEASE KEEP HER OUT OF THIS STORY. I think even if your version of her is likable I still wouldn’t want her for Bette. She’s not worthy!! Thanks for posting often. You are giving us such a great storyline and dialogue that it inspires the conversations. Really good stuff. PPS

    4. It’s so good that Bette is moving on with her life and not hanging her chin in the dirt as Tina would have her do. This move will drive Tina nuts especially if Bette starts to date someone. JUST PLEASE DON’T LET IT BE jodi, that would spoil the mood of your story. Great update. Thanks for posting.

    5. have been away so didn’t have a chance to read and comment but just finished 4 chapters in a row…this is good, so good…i can see the struggle, especially where tina is concerned, she is trying to justify her return to men but it’s clear that things are not what they seem…can’t wait to see what’s next
