Truth Be Told; #21
It took Gen about ten minutes to reach Bette’s office and they sat listening intently to Tina. After Tina had finished, Gen smiled. There was a good chance that Adele would be sentenced to the time she deserved, thanks to Tina’s convincing closing.
“How is it,” Tina asked the both of them, taking a seat next to Bette.
“I think we have a good chance,” Gen replied, smiling, “We’re going to nail Adele with that.”
Bette look at them with a wistful smiles, “Yes, but there is always a chance that because of her insanity plea, she might get a lighter sentence than we had hoped for, right?”
Tina nodded, “There is a chance, B, but we’ve gotta look at the positive side of things. We have already proven that she had full knowledge of her actions, I doubt that the jury will see otherwise. We just have to give them one last convincing closing.”
“I’m just worried, T,” Bette said, tearing welling up in her eyes, “I don’t know if I can take it if she walks away.”
Gen sat across from the pair and watched Tina put her arm around Bette in a gesture of comfort. She had been battling her feelings towards Bette and this morning, she had nearly made a decision to fight for what she wanted, yet now seeing them together, she felt slightly disheartened. Gen looked onto the ground. She only wanted Bette to be happy and if Tina made her happy, then Gen just had to sit back and let Bette go her own way.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, you have sat there and watched this case unfold and I ask you to try to imagine being in the shoes of the family members, friends and loved ones of the girls who we have lost. The nearest to our hearts, gone without warning, because of a young girl’s selfish intentions. Do I believe that she committed these crimes without intent. No. Do I believe that Miss Adele Channing is suffering from a several mental handicap. No. Why? Because someone who had no intent to kill and who had a mental handicap would not have been able to think about profiteering from these murders. Her house would not have been filled top to toe with books about different ways of murder. Miss Adele Channing obviously had the ability to rationalize her actions, but yet, she continued to follow through with her plan without conscience and nearly harmed a fellow FBI agent. She lacked moral restraint and ended up killing four women in cold blood. Please do the right thing. Serve justice to this woman who had simple disregard for the lives of others.”

“You have one new voice message. Gen! It’s Jin. You have to call me back, alright? It’s urgent! Thanks.”
Gen picked up the phone and called Jin back, “Hey, you rang? I left my mobile at home today and only just got to checking my messages. I’m having a crappy morning really…anyway, what’s up?”
“Are you free to meet?”
“I’m kinda in the middle of waiting for the verdict of the Adele case.”
“Court just adjourned, right? They should take at least a couple hours.”
“I can’t just leave, can I meet you after they pass the verdict?”
“Oh, alright. I’ll meet you at your office after work, alright? Hopefully you’ll be done by then.”
“You haven’t told me what all this hoo-ha is about.”
“It’s about Bette, Gen. I have some news on Bette.”

hmm it’s getting good, beautiful update, not complaining ne more, will sit by and wait(smile) i’m a patient fan..but ur killing here with the cliff-hangers
Yay I’m first again lol. Now that were some very good arguments Tina put out there. i really hope the jury will see it the same way and convict this Adele character for the rest of her life or even to the electric chair. But even if she got convicted I don’t know if Bette will get an ease of mind cause after all it won’t bring her sister back and it won’t take away the awful experience she had to go through. She’s being strong now but I guess she will get the consequences of all this afterwards, it wouldn’t be bad for her to go see a therapist to deal with it all. I also hope Gen will finally make up her mind and give Bette all the support she needs. Thanks for posting hun, it was a joy reading as always :)
I’ve been enjoying this story from the beginning and hope that Gen decides what she wants from Bette and just goes for it! One thing–leading questions are perfectly permissible during a cross-examination of a witness (Tina cross examining the doctor). It’s the tool you use to make sure all the relevant testimony comes out!
