    When Hope is lLost

Ozzie was maybe six, or at least he thought he might be. He had been out on the streets almost since his birth. His mom was been a teenager raped by an uncle and thrown out of the house, as her mother felt she was a whore. She had tried to make it surviving with an infant and then when he was a toddler, but in the end she gave up, as it was much too hard being a teenage mom and finally, on one dark, rainy night she took her own life with an overdose of heroin. Rose, his next caretaker was elderly and had been a teacher at one time, but with layoffs and bad economics, she had also lost most of everything in her life and went out and survived on the streets.

Through the Grace of God she had found Ozzie the night his mom had died. He had a note pinned on him to explain that the dead woman was his mother and she was giving him to whoever wanted him. His important papers were in the envelope pinned to his bag. Rose happily took him in as she could see his special light about him and for the next three years she took care of him and taught him as much as she could about the world around him.

Fortunately, she was very observant of her young protégé as she recognized his brilliance in learning about the world around him and discovered that he was exceptional at problem solving. He also had this amazingly energetic aura that surrounded him that gave him this certain energy pattern that if one were in close proximity to him you felt surrounded with a blanket of love. She called him her little angel.

She taught him to read and as much about numbers and math as she could. He loved his lessons on science and loved to sing with her when she played the piano at the Girls and Boys Center. She taught him how to use his manners with others, find edible food in a variety of places and safe spaces to sleep out of the elements. They sometimes found money on the street and used it at several stores and shelters to get food, clothes and shoes, coats and stocking hats for the coming winter.

    2. What a great chapter bumsue. So different from the first.Loving this different take on Bettes new life in New York and her meeting Ozzie. So looking forward to your next update and where this story takes us.Glad you took that step to write a story for us to read and for the encouragement that others gave you to do so :)

    3. And there’s the kindness that Bette needed. I do hope Bette is allowed to be a foster parent to Ozzie. He deserves a home and Bette deserves the chance to repay the kindness she’s received. Thanks for the post. :)
