When the Day Leaves You, 11

Shane, Alice and Dana were sitting in the waiting room of Dr. Wilson’s clinic, when Shane felt compelled to elbow Alice and ask, “What’s wrong with her?”

Alice looked over at Dana who was staring out of the window, trying her best to fight back the tears. “Just ignore her; she’s afraid of needles. It’s all about the drama with that one.”

“I can hear you, Alice, I’m sitting right here!”

Shane smiled, “Are you sure the two of you aren’t…”

“Who, us, never, we’re just friends, I told you that already,” Alice argued.

“Alice Pieszecki and Dana Fairbanks,” yelled the nurse, now standing in the open doorway. “Oh fuck,” Dana whispered, as she grabbed her stomach.

Alice stood up and taking hold of Dana’s arm, began dragging her toward the door. She looked back at Shane, who was laughing, and said, “I really appreciate you driving us. I don’t think I could have handled her all by myself.”

“But, it’s only a blood test,” Shane quipped, “What is she going to do if she’s a match.”

As Alice pushed Dana down the hall, she yelled back, “Baby steps to the bus, let’s take this one step at a time, shall we,” and the nurse rolled her eyes before looking down at Shane. “How about you, handsome? Are we testing you today as well?”

Looking around before pointing to her own chest, Shane said, “Are you talking to me?”

Bette stood in the window of Tina’s room at the Wee Go, and stared blankly down to the street as she listened to the phone ring and ring…

Finally, a voice on the other end, “Hello.”

    “Alice!”

Shane hesitantly replied, “No, not Alice, it’s Shane.”

“Where is Alice, and why are you answering her phone,” Bette asked.

Shane looked in the rear view mirror and clearing her throat, answered, “No, she’s here, they just ran into the store. I’m waiting for them.”

“Them, meaning Alice and Dana,” Bette asked with concern. “Yes, Alice and Dana.” Bette sighed with relief and backing away from the window, began pacing the room. “Well, how long do you think they’ll be?”

    1. This is a great story. I love the way you write the Dana and Alice dialogue, it’s just too funny. Chuckling out loud should definitely be done before a computer that is fairly isolated so others won’t think that you are strange. Live and learn. PPS

    2. Great chapter! I love this story. Hmmm, I wonder..could it be Shane, who finally turns out to be a match? If she even got tested that is. That would be interesting..PPS

    3. LMAO at Bette and Alice’s phone conversation, especially the part where Bette says she couldn’t get a cab to stop and Alice says it’s probably because she’s half black (lol). Really excellent dialogue throughout. Can’t wait for your next update…keep ’em coming Girl!

    4. I had a feeling from the beginning dat it will be Shane who would save the day:) especially as Bette kinda doesn’t think much of her, great chppter
