Separate Lives – (Chapter: Chapter 2)
Story written on November 11, 2009 by colgan.
Helen was enjoying her work greatly as she was involved with cases that interested her. She found herself being cut out for criminal law, especially for disadvantaged women as it was a great advantage having been a governor in a prison to give her the necessary insight. She was flourishing as a young attorney and the firm’s partners were taking notice of Helen’s abilities. She was pleased with her professional life though she knew her family life was flattering and she was worried. Nikki was a beautiful woman and even at nearly 38, she could still pull. All of a sudden Helen realized that she was indeed 40 and they had no children and that had never been part of her plan when she thought of her life. As she was musing about her life, her co-counsel and young attractive solicitor Dominic Foster, rushed in with some files. "Hello Helen", he said in his Irish accent. Dominic was handsome, tall, with dark hair that was similar to Nikki’s and big blue eyes, that any woman could get lost in. "I have the files you need for your client in Larkhall prison", he continued as he smiled at her. Dominic was young at 28, specializing in murder cases, which piqued Helen’s interest. He was very well mannered and he never seemed to be as slimy as many of the males around the office. Always polite, he also brought her a tea, the way she liked it. She smiled and nodded an acknowledgement to him.
Nikki was at the club early meeting with Trisha and going over the books as they often did, once a week before heading to the bank to do their weekly banking. Trish looked at Nikki and noticed the dark circles under her eyes and the body language that she displayed, she was tired and it was noticeable. "Nik, is everything OK?" Trish looked concerned. Nikki whom was never a big talker, especially about her feelings, spoke to Trish her feelings that she wanted to tell Helen but was too scared too. "I’m not pregnant, and I feel like a failure." she said it so bluntly that Trish was shocked. All she could do was embrace Nikki close as possible into her chest, all the old feelings for Nikki suddenly emerged from her heart, and her body began to betray her, as she felt aroused by being so close to Nikki. She held Nikki tight and kissed the top of her head and then left to go on an errand as she muttered it quickly as she felt her resolve drain quickly and she did not want the embarrassment of Nikki knowing her feelings. Nikki watched as Trish left the club abruptly and decided that today she would make things better with Helen and reclaim their life.
