Crossing Boundaries (5)
The narrowness of the bridge isn’t what scared Bette. What scared Bette was the fact that she could see the shadows just behind the green wall whispering her name. Tina looked calm and collected as she led the way, hanging on to Bette’s hand.
"Bette," a voice whispered making Bette instictively grip Tina’s hand tighter.
Tina turned to her and said, "don’t listen to them, and whatever you do, don’t try to figure out whose voice is calling you."
"Why not?" Bette said gulping watching her step.
"Well, when I went to Westland I was almost lured into the Keeper’s grasp because the voice calling me was my sister’s," Tina said.
"Was it your sister?" Bette asked.
"I don’t know," Tina answered, "and I don’t wanna find out."
They reached a small clearing where the bridge wasn’t as narrow and they both paused to catch their breath.
Tina walked slightly ahead to look at the path and said, "we’re almost there."
"Bette," the voice said again. This time her head turned toward the voice and her brow furrowed recognizing the voice.
"Dad?" Bette said walking toward the voice as if in a trance.
"Bette?" Tina said turning around, "what are you doing? Get away!"
Tina reacted quickly, pulling Bette by the shoulders and pushing her down to the floor her foot kicking the green wall on the way down.
The temporary hole was open long enough to release a plethora of souls onto the bridge before it sealed again.
"Ahh!" Tina cried pulling out her knives, "don’t get emotional! They feed on it!"
Bette tried to control her emotions but she was already crying gripping the tooth her father gave her.
"Bette!" Tina cried crouching protectively trying to keep the shadows away.
Suddenly, Tina went flying into the air and almost slammed through the boundary as a shadow attacked her viciously. Then Bette started screaming in agony as the shadows pounced on her dragging her toward the boundary.
"Bette!" Tina cried again lunging into the dark pile and pulling out the night stone.
A blinding light flashed all throughout the bridge and screeching filled the air.
Then the light disappeared and the shadows were all gone. Tina leaned over Bette’s trembling form and caressed her face trying to calm her down. "Are you okay?" Tina asked as Bette’s breathing calmed down.
