    Kirk paced restlessly as Spock lay so still.  Rhaina paced as well and each time they passed each other in their circuit the more powerful the need for conversation between them grew.  If anyone understood the man who lay there just beyond reach it was those two.

     

    Christina was distraught and Elizabeth stayed close to her.  Christina was freer than her sire in some ways and more restrained in others.  Christina was a daddy’s girl.  She loved both her parents still her bond with her father was one that centered her world almost as much as her bond with Elizabeth. 

     

    Christina shared a deep and loving bond with her mother yet how she was able to stand in the world and celebrate her difference was a result of her father’s example and his powerful love.  Christina never questioned her father’s love though it was never verbalized. It was a fact that she lived with. 

     

    Kirk was never known for his patience and stopped his pacing abruptly.  “Is there any way to bring him out of this…this…”

     

    “No” Rhaina answered without acrimony.  “He must resolve the deep conflict within himself.  There is no other way.”

     

    “I’m not so sure” Elizabeth ventured tentatively.  “Christina was roused when she perceived that I was in danger.  Perhaps if…”

     

    “If Father were to sense that someone he …cared for deeply were in danger he could be roused.” Christina considered aloud.

     

    “Or perhaps if we were to work on resolving the conflict that drove him into this state” Rhaina offered. “That might perhaps draw him back.”

     

    Kirk perked up with this idea.  It felt right. 

     

    “Rhaina, I withdraw my challenge for Spock as my mate.” 

     

    “Do you?” Rhaina raised a brow so much in the same manner that Spock would have causing everyone to hold their breath.

     

    “I will” Kirk affirmed.  “I did not think about what I was asking of him. He could not betray you and Christina, which is how he would see it.  He is the most honorable person I have ever known and I was a fool not to see that he would break faced with such a terrible choice.”
