    PUSH and PULL 2

    Previously

Tina has long been out the door, but Bette kept her gaze for full 5 minutes, almost without blinking, obviously lost in her own thoughts.

    BEEEEEp.

    “Jodi’s on the line…”

    “Ahh…ok!”

    BEEEEp.

    “Hey, babe…”

     ********************************************************************************

“Hey, where did you sleep last night?”

    “What do you mean?”

“I know I left you in the party, and I felt bad about it.  We both must have been so drunk.”

“It’s ok…we’ve been like that for quite a while.”

“Oh, babe, don’t start with me now.  I drove past your house, say, 3:30 and you’re car’s not there.”

For a mere second, Bette thought of a sound excuse…

“Well…I had Alice drive me home.”

If not for Jodi’s smugness, she would have sensed that Bette was lying.

    “Ok.”

    “Ok?”

    “Ok…It’s just Alice.”

“Well…Alice was an ex-girlfriend.” Bette toying with Jodi.

“I knew about that.  So what…do you want me to feel a li’l jealous?”

“Not really, but I at least want you to care.”

“I’m sorry.  But I don’t think you’ll ever wanna be back with her.”

“And why is that?  Alice is cute.  You know that I have a thing for blondes right.”

“She’s CRAZY Bette. I can’t even believe you went out with her for a while.  I mean sex could be that good but I could only give it a week or so.”

“That’s so mean, Jodi.  Al is a friend…a good one. I can’t believe you can speak about her that way!”

“What…I’m just being honest.  What’s up with you?  It’s you who started this conversation, right?!”

“I trust you—that could have been a nicer thing to say.”

“Nice—the art world isn’t nice.  We’re not nice people.  We’re expressive, articulate, and complicated but nice. That’s why we’re right for each other.  I need you, you need me. It’s how it works, babe.”

Jodi knew exactly how to put the great Bette Porter under her manipulative spell.  She’s the only one who succeeded in doing so.  She could be meaner than Bette, so secure and sure of herself.

Bette took a deep breath, “Let’s skip lunch. We’re both upset. Call me later.”

“Ok. I’m actually having lunch with Amy. We’re working on a piece.”

“Wait, Amy? The one you fucked before you left New York.”
