The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner After Yale (Part 4, Chapter 3)

The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner After Yale (Part 4, Chapter 3)

    PART FOUR: NEWPORT BEACH, CALIFORNIA

    Chapter 3

It was so hard not to call Bette – not to get even that little snippet of her recorded voice as a daily fix but I kept my word and stopped calling. Thursday dragged into Friday and I held my breath a lot. I got home early on Friday and went for my evening walk on the beach to the pier and back. It got dark by 5 p.m. at that time of the year but I was able to see the sunset over the water. There was no more beautiful sunset than that embraced by the ocean with the horizon. Nothing impeded it. No buildings. No trees. I watched it until it was nearly dark and then I walked slowly home.

I opened a fresh bottle of wine and before the quiet, lonely night was over, I drank it all.

When I woke up the next morning I walked to the pier again. I saw the lady with the German Shepherd. We said, “Good morning,” in unison. When I got to the pier I walked out to the end of it and watched the fishermen for a while. I watched them bait their hooks with anchovies. There was the smell of fish in the air. There was the sound of the men talking to each other.

A small Mexican boy was fishing with his father. He had his own pole which looked very big in his wee hands but he was very seriously waiting for a fish to bite. I stopped to talk to him and asked him if he had any luck yet. He looked at me with his big brown eyes and long lashes and shook his head back and forth in a shy way. I left him to his concentration.

    There were the seagulls too.

They were fascinating to watch. They landed on the railings, that were white from their droppings and strutted back and forth, restlessly. They waited for a fisherman to drop something, either on the boardwalk or in the water and then they all went crazy, flaying their wings, squawking, screeching, fighting each other off for a tiny morsel.

    1. AngelDana, Yes, what you said is true but times are changing. Remember, this story, which was written in 2005, took place 20 years ago – now 22 years ago but I think we have made tremendous strides. Thank you for your comment.

    2. artgirl, Actually, there is Sissee the writer and Sissee the character. At first I was not putting a face on Sissee the character, telling my readers that it was them, each of them and that Sissee looked like how ever they wanted her to. However, then they banded together and decided she should have a face and collectively chose Diane Lane so in the rewrite, here, I described her as such. I see Sissee the character much detached from the writer. She is in my imagination as much as my other characters are.

    3. azmama, Part of the reason this story reads better then the first time is because I learned so much from you posters. I totally remember your once making reference to my being “dramatic” and when I reread these couple of chapters, stretched into one longer chapter, I thought, mmmmmmm, that must be what Azmama was talking about, so I honestly did tone it down a tad to make it less dramatic. So, thanks to you my friend, it may just read better.

    4. Your image of Bette at the shore reminds me of Bette, S1. Where did that leather coat go? She was so proud, so brilliant, so beautiful! Where is that Bette now, other than in our fanfic? Thanks!

    5. So glad to see Bette back. But at least Bette is willing to talk about it. BTW, so lucky of you to be able to put yourself in a story with Bette! Very clever, I wish I could!!!

    6. Ashley, Thank you for your encouragement. I hope your idea of “journey” also means, “Adventure”, as in The Adventures of……….
