The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner After Yale (Part 4, Chapter 4)
PART FOUR: NEWPORT BEACH, CALIFORNIA
Chapter 4
Bette and I watched the sunset. It was truly extraordinary. It was like seeing a cinemascope movie in slow motion. The color combinations were spectacular. The waning sun became a bright orange ball, casting a long trail of light on the darkening waters, all the way to the shore in front of us.
The horizon line was a blend of that orange with reds and yellows reaching north and south.
Then, for a brief moment, a classic scene appeared when a sail boat glided in front of the sun, looking solid black as it passed, leaving an explosion of bright sparkles along the light path, winking at us. It was almost as if Mother Nature had waved a wand to create the affect. It was all very brief, as the orange sphere slid slowly below the curve of the earth.
Bette was mesmerized. She said that no artist whose work she had ever seen could have painted such a magnificent view. We watched it until it was dark and then walked slowly back to my house. We were very silent all the way to the front door.
When I unlocked it and turned on the living room lights, I saw Bette glance over at the couch as if Howie’s ghost was sitting there with his feet up on the coffee table. It made me uncomfortable because I sensed that she had stiffened at the recollection. I knew I had to handle this with velvet gloves and not rush into anything, although I had the strongest urge to just fall into her arms.
I asked her if I could take her coat. She slipped it off and handed it to me. Then I asked her if she would like to see the house. As I took her from room to room, she simply nodded politely. When she saw the Mammoth layout on my bulletin board in the spare bedroom, she smiled. She had told me earlier on the telephone that she had cut the story out and had it framed for her home office in Venice. We chatted briefly about how much fun we had there.

So powerful and really sad, Sissee. Sissee (the character) can’t have her cake and eat it too. Bette must really love her to stay. Sissee is really afraid of public opinion. Howie’s a safe (but boring) alternative to Bette. It’s 1985? It takes courage to be gay (and out) at that time.
Considering the time, yes, it’s a big adaptation to make. But it’s not a choice. Love is love. Without restrictions or genders.
Sissee, great story can’t wait to read more!! PPS!!!!
The emphasis on the cigarettes makes it seem much earlier. I still get a late fifties/sixties sense from this story. I appreciate Sissee’s honesty and her desire to be deliberative about proceeding. No easy choices here.
hope4tb, Thanks for your comment. I wish I could get these chapters out faster but sometimes I get pretty busy in my real life which makes it hard to be here too.
techgal, Sorry if you are getting a 50-60 feel her instead of the mid-80’s. People surely still smoked in the 80’s, especially young people.
Artgirl, Thank you for being here. I need all you girls to keep encouraging me since it is disheartening to see my low numbers next to some of the others. It sure as hell keeps me humble. As for Bette wanting Sissee exclusively, yes of course she is right to make that demand but keep in mind they are 22 years old. Bette was raised in a sophisticated world while Sissee is just a small town girl and rather naive at this point in her life.
Ashley, You make me smile. You say the chapter is too short. Actually, it is the longest one I have written so far. I can’t keep up with you girls!
Great as usual. I give Bette credit, I wouldn’t want to share either. I understand how hard it is for sissie and I hope Bette understands and has patience, but no sharing. Make the commitment and go for it. Way to go Sissie.
Way too short again, but what a way to tell a story. Just love it very much. Post soon please.
AngelDana, You are absolutely correct. Love is indeed love and that is why Sissee caved – her love for Bette was greater than the social stigmas they faced at that time.
Azmama, As usual, you get it. Thanks for your comments and summing it up so well.
i remember 1985 and someone making me make the same choice…freaky sissee
